Crossfire question

I have 2 ATI 4890's in cf. When I open the ATI catalist click the crossfire tab and click identify GPU it shows a big 1. Is it identifying both gpu's as 1 since they are in cf or is it only seeing 1 gpu?
Also, my motherboard manual says to enable surround view in bios and set UMA buffer to 256m for cf. When I do this I lose 500meg of useable ram and memory performance suffers with no change in video performance.
Anyone understand this?

The easiest way to verify that your Crossfire is working properly is to download GPU-Z

http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

It will tell you at the bottom.
