Hello,

Does on mainboard gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 the ADM Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition and DDR2 2x2GB workable?

There are exists 2 different Phenom 2 X4 965 with TDP 125W and TDP 140W.
What is better and what faster. Does there are problems or speed problems with CPU (FSB)?

Can I use my old DDR2 800MHZ 2x2GB?

In the CPU-List of gigabyte is the 965 CPU not exists. 955 does.

The 965 first came out in the 140W version and clocked at 3.4GHz, now the 125W version has been released.. It is clocked the same speed just uses a little less power, generating a little less heat. Other than that they are nearly identical.

That board should support the CPU with a proper BIOS update, going by the website it does say AM3 ready. Your DDR2 should work, but you should probably post what brand it is at least.. there should be a RAM compatibility guide for the board on the site.
Please post the rest of the system specs you might plan to use so we can further advise you on your path to AMD glory. :)

Hi,

thank you for your mail. My computer work since 2 years. Now I would like to update the CPU to get more power. When it is not needed replace the ram to 1066MHZ is better? Does it is very slower when I use old Ram 800MHz in percent or 800MHz do not work with this "Phenom II X4 965"?

CASE... CoolerMaster
CPU... Athlon 64 X2 6400+
RAM... 2 x 2GB DDR2 Kingmax Semikonductor PC2-6400
MOBO... Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 (I have newest firmware F8f updated)
GPU... GECube ATI HD3870
HDD... 3x different (320GB Seagate, 280GB Maxtore, 1,5TB Seagate)
OS... WinXP Prof 32Bit with SP3

OC is not needed but when it is possible is great ;)

What you mean with one dimm when I use 1066MHz? 1x4GB 1066MHz Ram?
Does the Phenom II X4 965 the last fastest X4? I heared that in 2Q. 2010 X6 will released only.

They are the same speed. No difference except one is an older version and uses more power.

Yes.

The 965 (125W) CPU should work fine even though it's not on the list. The only difference between it and the 955 is the stock speed.

The 965 (140W) should not be used in that board.
The 9950BE is also a 140W CPU and is not listed either. That means the board is not built to support a 140W CPU, only 125W and lower.

Hope that helped ... :)

The board has 4 RAM slots, but 2 channels, usually denoted by A1/A2 and B1/B2 or something like that. 1 DIMM per channel just means that you will only be able to use 2 sticks to run at 1066mhz, if you populate all 4 slots it will drop down to 800mhz. But your RAM is 800mhz so that doesn't really matter unless you plan to upgrade.
