Hey guys, I recently made a post about purchasing an Alienware but everyone encouraged me to give building one a shot. So I thought I might as well try. Although I have to admit, I am a beginner and I have never built my own computer before.

My budget is $1000-1500 and I am hoping you guys could suggest some builds. Thanks in advance.

So far I am looking at Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor and a Western Digital Caviar Black 750GB Hard drive.

Parts that will carry over are: 19inch monitor, wireless card, and my optical drives.

OK, I'll offer something up for you.

CPU: i7 920 $289 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202

MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R $189 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128375

RAM: GGB. Skill DDR3-1600 $150 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231225

Cooler: Noctua NH-12P SE2 $75 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608014

HDD1: Western Digital Caviar Black WD7501AALS $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136283

HDD2: Western Digital Caviar Black WD7501AALS $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136283

GPU: XFX HD-585A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5850 $310 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150442

PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W $110 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006

CASE: Antec Nine Hundred Two $110 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129058

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit $140 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116758

=$1533...Sorry but I exceded your budget and left nothing for a monitor or tax + shipping but you could downgrade the GPU to a 5770 and save about $130. You could drop one of the hard drives too if you wanted to but it's good to have a separate storage drive. If you live near a microcenter you can get the CPU for $200 so you would save another $80. Some of the items have a rebate too so you would get some of it back. Make a few changes to this set up and it becomes a $1240 build which would leave you money for a monitor / keyboard / mouse / speakers etc...

EDIT: If you don't want to overclock the cpu you can drop the $75 cooler and just use the stock one instead..

You should look into the i5, has better price/performance at this point in time. You really only need at least a 550 minimum watt PSU. Stick with corsair brand though.

Thanks for the recommendations. Good thing I already have Win7 Professional and an external of 1.5 GB so I won't need both HDs. So that will bring it down a bit. Also I am likely going to switch to i5 after discussing with a few of my friends.

Do you need a monitor? Case? etc? Aside from the HDD, what other carry overs will go? Optical drive?

be well worth your time to do this .. its a great experience and will save you money too :bday:

dont be worried just make sure you take your time .. i remember my first build .. had two weird wrist anti-static straps on .. being so so so careful .. but when i got it to boot i was so excited ... my family was giving me a bunch of crap telling me i was crazy an that im in way over my head to think i could put a computer together .. now they always call me when they have problems .. its not hard at all ..enjoy it because you'll always remember the experience

Earthdogs build is pretty much exactly what I would have offered, though with one addition. You said you had an external 1.5 TB drive but does that mean you have no internals? If so take a look at either of these.

500 GB

750 GB

I have the one in the first link currently in my computer and have had no problems with it so far. The only difference is the size so it really depends on how much space you want to have internally.

EDIT: Also depending on how big of a gamer you are you can downgrade the video card to an HD5850 and save yourself a hundred bucks. Just a thought.

So far I have my Processor and the two parts above. Slowly getting the pieces together.
