Low idle temps High Load temps

Hello,

I'm having a problem. My system is slightly overclocked from 2.6ghz to 3ghz on stock voltage. My idle temps are pretty low, usually 30-35c, however under load it reaches 70c very quickly. Any idea what could cause this?

What CPU? What heatsink? What ambient temperature? What case/airflow? Load in games or Linpack or prime95?

I would expect that to be normal with that ambient temp and that cooler. Did you add volts to reach 3Ghz?

Still sounds about right. This is with HT enabled and Large FFT?

13ºC ambient and 70ºC on cores in prime95 with 10X Quiet and HAF 922?
Something is not right there. Not right at all.
Can you post a screenshot with prime95 running, RealTemp and CPU-Z?
What TIM and amount and how did you spread it?

I used the thermal paste that came with the cooler. I applied an almost invisible layer to the heatsink and cpu. Here is a screenshot http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/5704/temps.gif

OK, you're in the safe zone with 26 distance to TJMax but to be honest I've expected max temps (for 13ºC ambient, 10X Quiet and a very ventilated case ) to be in lower 60's not lower 70's.
You can try to lower Vcore I'm pretty sure that you can do 3GHz with lower Vcore. But again nothing to worry now about core temps. I'm curious how they'll look in the middle of summer with >25ºC ambient temperature.

LE: if you touch heatpipes/fins they are hot/warm/cold? At 71ºC core temps they should be pretty hot.
Can you try to remount heatsink? And if is possible to take a picture of IHS and heatsink base after you remove them? I'm curious about TIM spread pattern.

Thanks for the help. I live in a kinda small apartment that doesn't cost much to keep cool, so I usually keep the temperature about 55f in the summer as well (i live in Texas and hate the heat), so hopefully things will stay safe.

I'd try backing off the voltage a bit too... my i7 only hits 75C at 1.37volts and 3.9GHz.... that does seem a little warm for an i5... aren't they supposed to run cooler?

Try backing that voltage waay back. Im running 3050 with a bclck of 145 at 1.15 volts and I get the same temps you do with the stock cooler and about 75°F ambient.

Hello, I decreased the voltage to 1.2v, then a bit later overclocked to 3.2ghz. My temps never go over 70c now, where as before they could reach 75c at times.

I'd think about reading up on proper Thermal Paste usage. Or at least checking the TPaste pattern your getting. Looks like your okay tho now.
