No you do not need an ageia PhysX card.Ati supports physics , just not PhysX , which is not a big deal ....
 
you could go grab a 9600gt or something faster. I am not gonna bother, cus none of the games I care about atm use physx...
 
You may rin into trouble when using NVidia card while keeping ATi card for main display. Current NVidia driver disables PhysX if the NVidia card is not the main card.
 
also.. id think at those voltages you can oc that card a little more.. at least on the memory.. my 5770 at 1.2 is 1000/1375.. can probably go to about 1010/1400 but that starts hitting the limit
 
I have a physX add-on card in one of my system. I don't see why people avoid it so much. Some games use it and the effects are pretty cool.
