any suggestions before baking my card?

From the getgo, my Nvidia 8800 GT needed underclocking by 8% to minimise on lockups and screen artifacts in 3d games. It would freeze for a few seconds, and then the textures would be garbled. That was a year ago.

Now, I have to underclock my GPU by 10%, and memory by 50% to maintain some sort of stability.

  • GPU temp runs at 60 to 70 degrees celsius(well within range)
  • Used driver sweeper/cleaner before installing new forceware drivers->nothing
  • Used driver sweeper/cleaner before installing old forceware drivers->nothing
  • Removed a harddrive and cdrom drive in case of not enough voltage getting through to the card -> nothing
  • Used a different power cable for completeness sake -> nothing

I am considering using the "bake in an oven for 5 minutes" option in case this issue is caused by crappy soldering.

Any other suggestions before I bake my card?

First thing I would recommend trying is a different system. Put the card in a totally different system and see if the problem is still there. It may be that your Power Supply is slowly dying, creating the need to lower the cards power requirements. It's also possible it could be the PCIe port on the motherboard doing the same thing. I'd definitely keep baking the card as a last possible resort until you are certain it is the card.

I thought I had a problem with a card because it acted similarly. I even bought a new card but the problem was still there because it was the motherboard giving issues.

Why didn't you RMA the card right after you tested it? Can you RMA it now?
