Games have ruined my life

http://www.gamespy.com/articles/107/1071457p1.html

This is an opinion article from one of the guys at gamespy.com By far one of the best articles I have read in a long time. The point of his little rant is to stop people ridiculing video games because they ruined your life. Rather, you should take charge and say hey, I'm going to play for only so many hours or I'm going to go out for once.

I suggest everyone should take the time to read this article.

I laughed so hard at this article. I loved it.

I broke out laughing at work when I read this:

"Games are better than they've ever been. Shut up, they are. I know you have fond memories of discovering Doom when you were twelve. You're not twelve anymore and Doom sucks."

BRILLIANT. I agree. People do tend to find anything but themselves to blame for shortcomings.

Although I do blame Overclocking for making me a Computer Engineer... which in turn makes me feel like an idiot, lazy, un-social, and everything else.

I disagree a little with the "games are better than they have ever been" statement. Games that were technical innovations are no longer impressive there are plenty of games that have stood the test of time for me.

I still go back and play fallout 2 about once a year.
Despite having tried a good portion of the newer RTSs (Dow, Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes, Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends, AOE3, AOM, WC3....) My friends and I still always end up playing Age of Kings: The Conquerers at every lan.

This is not to say that there are not fantastic games released recently, but to say that all of them are better then their predecessors is false in my opinion.

I do agree though that anyone who blames thier problems on video games has bigger issues. I managed to graduate college, have a decent social life and get a good job...all while playing video games.

I totally agree with that statement. Very few games have stood the test of time for me... the ones that have are strategy or sim type of games. Action/FPS games just do not hold up well. Then again there are almost NO FPS games that I play more than once (Call of Duty series is about it)

90% of the greatness of Doom for me today... is just looking back at playing it and being wowed.. although I only played it for a little while (was just not that interesting of a game), it still rates as a classic for me

Nope. Not gonna do it.

I don't have time to take time to read the article. Matter of fact... I should've brought my DS with me so I could've played Chrono Trigger while my vegetable Lasagna was in the microwave.

Basically I get to play games for about 5-15 mins at a time. (Such is the busy life of Team Rainless). I played about ten minutes of Borderlands today.

Finished one side-quest and turned-in for my reward.

That's about where I am with gaming these days.

long as your not one of those guys that shows up to class with their rolly backpacks. They are exactly the reason i insist on taking at least 1 liberal arts class a semester. That and the fact we all know how many women actually take engineering classes .

There is only one girl in my department.... I found out where all the girls do end up; over at the Chem E building doing undergrad and grad work. Luckily with my job I deliver a lot of computers to them each month

The minute you let anything virtual take over your life that is when you know you are a weak person or have nothing else better to do.

Gixxerguy6 will chime in shortly regarding some people he knows that play a game and can't get enough of it. Sometimes they spend thousands on it.
