overclocking little by little

i've been overclocking little by little, and i got to here http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1062707
now when i test it in prime 95 and my temps go around 65 degree it underclocks itself and undervolts itself to a 6.5 multiplyer and a vcore of around 1.000 is this a normal cpu saftey mechanism.

Ouch. 65C is getting up there, and yes, the Phenom can throttle when it hits high temps, provided the motherboard has support for the function. Check your BIOS - 65C is most likely the thermal throttling setting in there right now.

What kind of cooling do you have on it? The first-gen Phenom is a veritable blast furnace of a CPU. You're not that far above stock, so 65C just shouldn't be happening...

They Hyper TX3 isn't a bad cooler, especially for $16. I had an X3 8650 that I put one on (that my sister and brother-in-law have right now) that doesn't work too badly. At its stock 2.4GHz, it loads in the high 40s. I'd expect a CPU like yours to load in the mid 50s. It'll be better than the stock cooler for sure, but a few more bucks buys a lot of cooling capacity these days. The Hyper 212 Plus can be had for $30 or so, and will drop those temps down another 5-10C.

If you have a Microcenter nearby, the 212 Plus is available from there for $24. Which is better than anywhere online has them for. For that money, the 212 simply can't be beaten.

I'd spend a bit more and get a Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer.
This one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835207004

It clips right on to AMD's brackets, and is a very solid cooler, it gives the $80 coolers a run for their money, generally speaking. (They do beat it, though)

would the 212 plus fit in my mid tower case i have the smilodon by raidmax i think my hd4850 will get in the way of its 120 mm fan and the sun beam core contact freezer looks like a rebranded version of the hyper tx3 so i might just go with the hyper tx3 since its the cheapest. a friend told me that i also need mosfet coolers is this true, because in his motherboard i can't see the mosfet anywhere so i guess they are under the heatsinks. but in the m3a78-em i can see the mosfets. well i messed with the clocks again it looks like this now http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1063218 i'm not sure if its better or not, the cpu and ram is faster now but the ht link got slower.

Hyper tx3 only had three heatpipes to the sunbeam's four.

The cheap one will still beat the stock cooler by a bunch.

Having blown a power chip on the only board I've owned (recently) without a MOSFET cooler I agree with your buddy. But as long as you keep the voltage low, have good case airflow, and a cool CPU it shouldn't matter. Heating up the MOSFETs with hot air off the stock CPU cooler is not a good thing, especially if you're running 60+ °C.

... but the Sunbeam is a much better deal - especially at (Hooray, the MIR is back!) $25 ...

ok i might get the sun beam then, but if the duo orb can cool the mosfet too this might work better, i might beg gf for money tommrow well i removed my battery of my mother board, and it goes up to 68 now without underclocking itself. is it really not safe to go above 65. oh yea i forgot to mention that i did bring the battery back right after i took it off. haha intel people are so lucky no need to multiply anything and worrying about ht stuff.

Cheaper (and probably better) to buy the Sunbeam 120 and some aluminum or copper sinks for the MOSFETs.

I do have a couple of rigs using a sink similar to the Duo-Orb (the GeminII) - trust me, the Sunbeam & sinks is better. The rigs I use them on have MOSFET sinks but they have no case so the extra fan is nice to have and the air is cooler with dual fans. If those same rigs were in a case with a rear exhaust fan I'd be running Sunbeams on them.

Edit:
According to AMD's specs the 9950 shouldn't be run higher than 64°C with some models being limited to 61°C - and most of us limit it to the mid-50's just to be safe ...

That's a good sign.

Hyper 212: 120 x 79.7 x 158.5 mm (L x W x H)
Sunbeam 120: 125 x 104 x 155mm (L x W x H)
Hyper Tx3: 90 x 78 x 138mm (L x W x H)

Smilodon case is 205mm wide - you'd think there would be 2" (50mm) extra in there but I guess you never know ...

I doubt the Sunbeam would have a problem with the video card but I don't know about the others. Many coolers mount top/bottom with the fan below the CPU blowing air upward but the Sunbeam mounts with the fan over the RAM slots and the air flowing toward the rear case fan.

If you mean the Corsair H50 it's a pretty good cooler and no problems with clearance but you do need a good rear fan. Other than that, and the Swiftech H20-220 water cooling kit, I don't know what an h20 might be. The Corsair is the only factory sealed "water cooling" unit I would trust ...
