Newbie trying to OC Q8300 on a p5n-d

My motherboard is a P5n-D and Im running vista x64 on a quad core Q8300 with an Nvidia GTS 250 card

In BIOS, I really have no idea how to overclock this thing, there are no simple options except for one under 'advanced' which will let me overclock up to 20%, but when I do that It doesnt boot up and I'm not sure how to mess with voltages to fix it, or even if thats where I'm supposed to go to OC it!

Where in bios should I be looking in order to OC this? I've tried overclocking programs but they just adjust the multipliar down when my CPU isn't being used much...which doesn't help me at all.

I just updated my BIOS from ASUS (holy SH*T do they have a crappy website for this), but it didnt help my situation.

help? ideas? thanks guys, I'm new here =)

EDIT: My RAM is p6400 running at 800mhz and I have an "Overclock proof" non-stock fan, and I added a few fans to the case itself, so cooling isn't an issue.

well from what i can make out from here

you need to set the AI Tuning to manual, then go to system clock. in there you should be able to adjust the FSB, run the ram unlinked and set to DDR2-800 as you have now.

When I follow those directions and ONLY change the FSB speed, even if its only by +1, my computer wont boot
I leave the vcore set to auto, is that bad?

auto isnt bad but if your ocing it can increase voltage to higher then needed for that speed. what are your settings at now? are you running the ram linked or unlinked and at what speed?

Linked or Unlinked doesnt matter, If I increase the FSB by just 1 it wont boot up.

EDIT: By that I mean I have yet to get an successful OC and I'm running at defaults now

unlink youre memory keep it as low as you can run it, that will keep the memory out of the picture wile trying to overclock cpu. disable all cpu features like c1e eist ht and any outhers. dont use auto overclocking set it to manual when you do that you will have all kinds of voltage options to play with dram,nb ,sb,vcore and so on .i usually go up one setting on nb,and sb,for starters now find you memory voltage and bump that up a little.as for cpu check around the fourm to find out what voltage people are using with that cpu for that level of overclock you need more than default for sure bump it up a few from default to start and watch youre temps quads get hot quick. Please don't use abbreviations, I have no idea what nb and sb stand for...
I left memory running at its default 800mhz with the mem voltage at auto, then disabled all the power save features you mentioned^

I then set it to unlinked and bumped the CPU voltage as high as it would go and increased the FSB by just 1......and it didnt boot....

So.....any other ideas?

No offense but if you dont even know what nb and sb mean i think you should learn a little more about the hardware that you are trying to overclock before you just jump in head first. People here are willing to help you but no one is gonna hold you by the hand to do it at the same time. That being said the first thing i would do if i were you is read the manual for your board and then do some googling to see if you can learn more about the hardware that you are using. Good luck.

What options do you have to set memory speed at. It's been a long time since I worked with that board.

i had a decent amount of trouble ocing my q6700 on my p5n-d, i actually got the best "results" using auto on that board rather than manual, that being said i could never go past 10%, which was still a decent OC, i think it was 2.66->3.1ghz

Alright so I looked around online,
@lokie- your right, i found out that stuff on my own
@wingman- memory is default, I'm not trying to OC that
@jmiller- the auto overclock doesn't work

to recap: no matter what voltage i set vcore to it wont boot, I've tried disabling all power features as well as bumping the NB up to 130 (from 100)
the auto overclock doesn't work at ANY level
if I change the FSB by even 1 it won't boot.

ideas?

Try and set memory clock mode to linked then set fsb memory ratio to 1:1 then try overclocking.

doesnt work, because when I do linked 1:1 my memory tries to overclock to 1333.3, up from 800
1333.3 is the FSB

I just noticed that your board runs DDR2 800-667-533 MHZ so you need to try 5/4 or 3/2 linked if that does not work, what voltage settings have you tried and have you tried making a bigger jump in the fsb, also use unlinked you might be in FSB hole.

I've tried just a variety of voltages (including the max voltage and auto), and never done linked aside from that 1 time up there^ as I said I dont wanna OC my RAM
I've tried pushing FSB up to 1500 (from 1333.3 again), didnt change anything.

If you use 5/4 or 3/2 It will underclok your memory to DDR2 -667-533 MHZ then you can try overclocking your FSB.

Well in my opinion you should also check out the GigaByte Mobos, they are very good and are very simple to overclock your cpu. As i did. I had no information and still have not enough but Gigabyte let me tweak the feautres easily. Now i do know how to overcock my cpu but then as I dont have any cooling system like most people have like water cooling or thermal compounds or whatever. I simply own an Intel Stock Cooler which came with my PC and I use toothpaste as thermal paste. So I mean after all this that i do know how to overclock now but i dont have enough appropriate knowledge or techniques that with which values should i go for overclocking. like the PCI Values. The Voltage control of the CPU increasing it or decreasing it without proper knowledge might be bad. So hopefully you would find a great deal and help from someone. Thank you peace35.

@wingman, underclocking my RAM didn't help at all. =/ other ideas?

@agentquad, I don't want a new Mobo, don't have the money nor the time needed to install and get it to work. As I said I have an OC-proof cooler so I'm not worried about that, thanks though.

EDIT: I just noticed that my Vcore max's out at 1.6000, and my CPU is currently using 1.55V, could this be the problem?

EDIT (2): Also just noticed that my FSB is listed in there as 1333.3, and after looking around online this seems obscenely high, yet it is the default with a 7.5 multiplier.....is this normal or what?

You sould not go over 1.3625V for Vcore. Have you tried uping the voltage for your FSB and MCH

FSB 333 quad pumped X4 =1332 so that is normal.
