DVI to HDMI

Hey,

I have a 8800gt installed on my acer aspire m5100, which has an onboard ati radeon x1250. I've had to disable the ati for the 8800gt, however, there is a hdmi port onboard this computer that I want to use to connect my tv.

Is this possible without disabling the 8800gt?

I dont want to loose the performance of the 8800gt, but want high quality picture for my tv. 8800gt only has dvi outputs, hows hdmi vs. dvi-to-hdmi?
Thanks.

Welcome to the forums.

Give the x1250 a try and see how it does. As far as I know, you would have to boot from one graphics device or the other at any given time and there wouldn't really be any way around that.

How big is your TV? What quality of playback are you going to want out of it?

If you go DVI to HDMI, you will have to find a separate solution to get the audio from the PC to the TV.

I'm no expert though, and I really know nothing about that chipset or integrated graphics other than it's not high end. Someone else may be able to help you further.

If you are running W7, you should be able to run both ATI and nVidia drivers at the same time IIRC. Set your BIOS to use the Onboard regardless if it detects a PEG card (something like "Initialize onboard graphics only if PEG is not present / or Always initialize onboard graphics").

Then you *should* be able to use extended desktop for the 2 cards. Never tried this with 2 different brands, but I believe W7 will make this work assuming your BIOS allows it as well...

Of course, whatever display you have on the x1250 will be limited by the x1250's performance (the 8800 won't accelerate anything connected to the x1250's video ports)...

thnx all

I've hooked it up using DVI to HDMI from my 8800gt, and my Sharp LC40e77u picks up the signal as 1080p.

Thanks for that interesting idea of hooking both up, I may try it sometime just for 'kicks'. For now this is running fine, the tv is lagging a little bit with crysis though.
