I'm helping a friend's mother get her computer back up and running. It's hanging on the XP boot screen, hanging on safe mode attempt, hanging on pretty much everything I tried. The computer's a couple of years old, I figured I'd just pop out the HDD, backup the personal files and get her into Win7.
I mounted the HDD onto my local machine, obviously, HPs have a recovery partition built in. The recovery (logical) partition is about 25GB at the end and it comes up as a drive, the Primary partition, where the Windows installation should be is just showing up as unallocated space.
My only guess is the HDD is bad or she got some sort of virus that made the partition unrecognizable...or maybe this is some sort of security built into HPs (doubtful).
Any ideas? Should I simply skip straight to a data recovery program?
