Taco Bell restaurant accidentally gives customer $2,000

DAYTON, OH (CNN) - There are mistakes and then there are "mistakes." In Ohio, it seems a Taco Bell restaurant employee goofed-up big-time while working at the drive-through window there. Now, the police are involved.

Surveillance video shows a woman placing her order at the Taco Bell and pulling up to the window.

Police say instead of getting food, though, the worker hands over the morning's deposit: about $2,000 in cash.

"Somebody got lucky," said one person. "Instead of getting a burrito, they got way more than what they really afforded."

"Being myself, I'd bring it back because, you know, I'd tell them how stupid they was for handing me something they shouldn't be handing me in the first place," said another. "But, I would have brung it back."

Reports say, typically, the deposit is placed inside a Taco Bell bag. The manager drives through, like a customer, gets the cash and heads to the bank.

The worker, though, mistakenly handed the bag of cash out instead of a bag of food. So far, that customer has not come forward to return the money.

"I don't know," said on person. "Honestly, I think I might be at the mall. But the right thing end up making me bring it back, so it would be hard. But, hey, $2,000, you know.

Dayton, Ohio, police are eager for any information about the woman who was inadvertently handed the bag of money. She is described as college-age, with black or brown hair.

I'm thinking they do it so it's less obvious they are bringing out the money, and therefor less likely to get robbed?

If the college kid really needs it, they should just take out 500 and send the rest back anonymously. I'm sure taco bell would be happy enough with that...

If it wasn't a franchise I'd definitely keep it. I don't mind depriving Taco Bell of any amount of money, but doing it to some nasty little badly run fast food franchise might actually threaten people's jobs.

Idiot manager should be fired anyway for having the money in a food bag and not a zippered and locked bank bag.

That is the most rediculous money handling policy I've heard of. If someone wants to rob the deposits all they have to know is who the managers are or their cars, this stops nothing but creates the potential for stupid mistakes like this. The dumbest part is that they put it in a Taco Bell bag too! I can see handing it through the drivethrough to avoid walking through the parking lot in some bad areas, but why do they need to use a Taco Bell bag to do it? I understand it completes the illusion but it seems silly and it's not like this is a CIA spy operation.

Well with a CIA operation, you don't have employees who stayed up and only got 3 hours of sleep the night before because they were studying for a final or fighting with their boyfriend. You also won't have employees who barely graduated high school and are using this job as a means of paying bills until they get their certification in another field.

This "routine" was built to fail. It's kind of like having a ritual where you splash water on your face while standing over the open case of your computer. Why do something that has SO MUCH fail waiting to happen?

A Taco Bell employee hands $2000 to someone they shouldn't.

Why should the person they gave it to, make that same mistake? lol

If all the video shows is a woman getting a Taco Bell bag through the drive through, even if the worker recognizes the woman, good luck proving that there was money in the bag. All the lady would have to do is act shocked, and state all she got was food.

i am guessing they probably had a zippered and locked bank bag inside of a taco bell bag. when i was a manager at mcdonald's through high school and college, i would just take the deposit in a zippered and locked bank bag inside one of the quarter bags the bank gave us to take our change back with. some managers would also put it in a bag to make it a little less obvious, but we always kept it in our possession.

either way, i would think that for something like that sort of hand off that one manager should be giving it to the one coming through the drive thru instead of just a crew member handing out the bag.

i had taco bell for lunch, sadly there were just tacos in my bag...

in my opinion the bank bag should probably have not made any layovers between the safe and the bank, or at least safe to manager (manager picking up the money through the drive through is just lazy and i don't sympathize for them)

Dang, I shoulda gone to taco bell for lunch 2 days ago.
(I live in dayton)
Though i've never had a store manager drive up for the deposit, i have had them drive by to give back change for the drawers. Seems... Dangerous to have them hand you the deposit.
