Go for the OCZ RAM, it's a little faster and you'll save money after that huge rebate.

And this is about as little as you can spend to get something that'll stay fairly current for the next couple years. I'd say just go with this setup, it is very good for the price you're paying, and you've chosen some good reliable companies.

thanks. I'm going to go with the OCZ Ram.

I don't know how the heck I'm going to put all of this together.
I've read many walkthorughs tho, but its nothingl like doing it yourself!

You can get the CPU and motherboard as a combo and save $20.

thanks! I didn't see that.
save me $20.

EDIT: I was thinking I want an asus Mobo. suggestions?

Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2

the ocz ram has some pretty bad reviews so I was thinking of going with kingston. (used in the past with no issues)

Just grab an inexpensive one, no need to hunt down a specific brand. And putting them together is easy...it may seem daunting but it's not. The parts are designed to only fit one way.

thanks for the posts.
I've been obsessing over my 1st build a lot!

I'm clueless as to what ram to get or what will work.
I know I need 240pin and ddr2. is that all I need to kno when buying RAM for this mobo?

I just bought a corsair PSU, and then I read online that the mobo I'm wanting to get says in the manual to get atleast 500w for this mobo.
Do you guys think the 400w corsair I bought will be enough?

EDIT: hows this RAM look? work with mobo?

You will be fine with the Corsair PSU, There is alot of bad info on the web and saying you need 500 watts for that motherboard is bad info.
As far as the memory, I have been reading alot of horror stories as well about OCZ Ram lately, That said, My wife's rig has been running 2x2gb sticks of OCZ platinum DDR2 800 for almost 2 years now with no problems. If I were to build a rig today with DDR2 I would likely go with Corsair of G.Skill memory.

An earlier poster suggested getting the Phenom II and trying to unlock an extra core or cores, The trouble is there is no guarantee you will be able to unlock, I would stick with the combo for the Motherboard and CPU that you have already picked out, You are on a budget and it's real easy to nickel and dime your build up in price. That's a very good price on a nice CPU and motherboard.

Since it's your first build, If you haven't already, I would take some time to read through Joe's guide to building your rig, Very well done and a handy tool for first timers.

Thanks for the help so far everyone!
Thanks ScottinIndy, you post was very helpful to me.

All I need now is to buy RAM and Hard Drive.

I'm Leaning towards a WD Black 500GB. Suggestions?
Btw I don't need 1TB. 500 is huge for me. (I'm going from a 100GB HD.) lol
Looking to spend $40-$60

EDIT-------- Will this setup work with XP? or will I have to buy windows 7?

I can't decide which RAM. The corsair or Gskill.
Which is better about their warrantys in case one fails?

I've also got a $20 gift card to office depot. they have some kingston ram.
I also can get 7% bing cash back from officedepot. =)
Which RAM should I get? Kingston Value Ram...hyper X? Which will work with my mobo?
They have too many different models. I'm confused on what to get.

Is there any way I can use my monitor, keyboard, and mouse for both computers? (Not at the same time.)
My monitor has an DVI thats not in use...so can I plug that into there and into my harddrive and use both. (not at the same time)

I have never had to use G.Skills customer service, So I really can't comment personally on their warranty service, I have had to RMA a flash drive and a PSU from Corsair and they were top notch in regard to taking care of any defective parts. Any company will have defective units so I don't hold that against them, They win you over by standing behind their products, In my eyes Corsair get's an A+ in that area.
I have never used Kingston Ram, So I really can't give an informed opinion either positive or negative.

bought this corsair.
$75 shipped AR

Just want to double check and make sure my psu is enough power.

PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-400CX 400W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

I also have a antec 900 case I will be using that have 3 fans. (idk if the fans take a lot of power)
let me know. thanks

The fans are not a significant power draw so don't fret em, For your current rig that PSU will be plenty, The only "X" factor is what you decide to do in the future as far as adding a video card. As your rig sits currently you probably won't be drawing much over 200/225 watts and that's if you O.C. the CPU, So you could still add a pretty decent video card and still be in the 300/325 watt range and still have ample headroom. While you should always make sure you have plenty of power, The power requirements of computer builds seem to get greatly exaggerated alot. It seems quite regularly we see builds that will draw 350/400 watts and the system builder is told they need a 750 watt PSU. In the end the amperage is really the key,Making sure you have enough 12v amps to run everything since the majority of computer hardware is driven by the 12v rail. The Corsair 400 watt unit you picked out has 30 amps on the 12v rail which is very good for a 400 watt unit and will be plenty for your needs.

thanks for the quick reply.
I appreciate you helping me and answering all of my questions.
I feel more confident in the PSU.

I think this is a great experience for me putting this build together and I feel I'm learning a lot.

I'd like to thank the people in this forum and all the guides I've read in this forum are great.

I will probably start my 1st build in 2 days when its my day off of work.
I can't wait!
Wish me luck.

You will be fine, If you have any questions when you start the build, Just fire away, The first build is always a bit scary, It does however give you a good feeling of accomphishment when you do it yourself, I think you take a bit more pride in your rig.

Questions for anyone willing to help.

1.
I have not plugged in and won't until I make sure everything is right.

I have port of my mobo that says 1394 and I have a cable from my power supply that says 1394. (firewire?)

Do I plug my power supply into that port?

---------

2.
I have a two 4 pin connectors that are on the same line from PSU but are separate.
It kind of looks like the video card power but it fits in the 8 pin power slot, but it doesn't look like the shapes match up perfectly.
Is that only for video card power or to power mobo?

The only other cable I have coming off the PSU that would maybe work is a 6 pin.

idk...I'm lost on this one.
