Hey everyone,

Looking to build a quiet, but powerful desktop for development, to run db servers and such. So, would like to stick with intel, I think I7 ...

Please recommend quality motheboard/CPU-heatsink/memory/HD (thinking of solid state). Also, video card should be great for business graphics and apps, maybe for some home image/video editing too.

Staying quiet and on budget, below $1K or less, is important.

Thanks so much :)

If you want quiet, powerful, and on a budget, I would look at the i5 series or (maybe, depending on the budget) Core2Quad. You want to run db servers AND business graphics and apps? What kind of apps and graphics?

Looking to run Oracle DB server, SQL server, My SQL. Also BI/ETL platforms like Cognos, Oracle, Pentaho, Informatica. Not looking to load a lot of data, just purely for small proof-of-concept setup. Going to dedicate a virtual machine per configuration of the DB server/BI/ETL platform.

Thanks!

You said your budget is less than $1000. Would you like to spend about $1000 per machine, or are you going for the biggest bang for your buck?

lol Def not looking to exceed $1K for this, at least for now. But quality components are important, next would be the biggest bang for the buck.

thx!

For SSD I would go for OCZ Vertex 2 it has vary good performance and reviews.
