Should I overclock?

When a first built my system a couple months ago I tweaked it out. I set everything back to default cause i really didnt need it. Even with bad company 2 set on high im averaging about 80fps which is plenty.

I could bump my 925 up 20% and my gts250 about 13% but i dont really need it. I was thinking of just ocing when the next generation of games come out and get as much of my cpu/gpu life at standard settings as I can. Does ocing really shorten the life span that much. I usually upgrade hardware about every 3 years.

I assume you mean your P2 925 not the pentium 4 925

2.8 is slightly low but you won't notice a massive difference by overclocking it. 3.0GHz would probably be the sweet spot for you if you want to overclock

If you overclock carefully however with the highest GHz as possible, it will last 3 years easy.

Even with a good over clock, generally what will happen is it will become unstable over time. At that point you can take off some of you overclock or add more voltage usually but this could very well be over three years down the road.

Most people run their daily drivers overclocked for years - shortening the lifespan to less than 3 years is VERY unlikely unless you are running very aggressive voltages with very poor temps.

If you have a higher end video card a OC will help you a lot. Take me a q9550 quad core at stock speeds 2.8 it bottle necks the hell out of my ATI 5850 if I OC to 3.8 I see a great gain in FPS.

Do lots of reading here OC is a great thing. Just watch ur temps

Thanks for the replys. My friend helped me out with some ic diamond thermal paste. I can't believe it dropped my cpu temp by 17c. I had no idea the thermal compounds where that different. I put some on my gpu as well. So now my 2.8 925 is at 3.4 and holding steady at 48c under load.

I don't know if this is true but I've seen a lot of threads on this forum saying that they needed a lot of voltage to get the same OC they could get when they first got the CPU. (mostly with the wolfdale cpus). But anyway, by the time that stage has arrived, Intel or AMD's new platform will be out and everyone will be rushing to buy that.
