Xbox 360 and .VOB

This seems to be something that I just cannot for the life of me find on any A/V site whatsoever.

I've tried TVersity but so far I've been unable to get my Xbox360 to stream a single .VOB (About 4.0GB) file from my PC.

I am using Windows XP SP3 and from what I understand only that godforsaken abortion of an O/S ... Windows MCE 2005 will work for this function.

Any ideas?

Yes. Quit wasting time making your 360 do media streaming and just get one of the several different high def media streaming devices that are readily available today. I personally stopped using my PS3 and picked up a Patriot Box Office device. You can find them anywhere from $50 to $100 and they play damn near anything that you can throw at them, including mkv, vob, iso, etc. And you don't have to run any sort of transcoding for them either, just share the directory on your network and wham, the media streamer can play it. Very simple and great quality. I do not regret the change one bit

Sweet - Do those devices do Optical out/SPDIF 5.1? If so that sounds cheaper than trying to find a SPDIF card for my Gaming Rig.

http://www.patriotmem.com/products/d...id=895&type=20

there is a link to the product page. I am not sure off the top of my head if it does optical out, but I think it does. I just use the sound out through the hdmi. Probably the best entertainment money I spent in the past year. They are so good that I bought a second one for the other tv!

Also WD makes one that works very well.

Yeah, there are several different ones out there. One of the things I like about the patriot unit over the WD is that the patriot housing is aluminum while the WD is plastic. They supposedly all work well though. Just a matter of preference.

I have had good luck with PlayOn with my Xbox 360 with their streaming ability. Its a paid app though.

Rename the vob file mpg and it should play. Me I use my X360, and the reason why, because I don't want to spend 50-100 bucks on a device to play media when I have something that does it perfectly fine. One less box, remote is all good in my book at least til I can get an entertainment center built probably sometime next year.

You are certainly welcome to the opinion. I used to use my PS3 and 360 as media players as well. But after thinking about it, I thought it would be much better in the long run to get the separate media player for several reasons...

1. Just play the media. No need to convert from one format to another, or mess with transcoding, or whatever. Just select it and hit play.

2. Media player is fanless (mine is at least) and even if it someday brakes and needs to be replaced, it is dirt cheap to do so. PS3 and 360 have loud fans in comparison, and when they break (especially the 360 as everyone claims...I had to replace my first one under warranty, but was a DVD drive issue) they are expensive to replace.

3. Said it before but saying it again...just select the item and play! No more wasted time having to convert from one format to another is worth its weight in gold to me. I love me some convenience.

I use TVeristy and it converts everything on the fly in real time and streams it from my workstation to my 360. With a good Quad and a 100mbit lan connection, it works great. It is a PITA to setup, but once you get everything working, it works great. Best of all its free.

The 360 isn't too great with playing anything but avi's and mpeg's. But a lot of times simply renaming the file extension will allow it to play. You can always re-encode stuff too. I just wish it could play mkv's and IMO its not worth buying a media player if you already have an xbox. It's not that complicated to get anything to play on it.
