USB devices won't work (error code 10)

First off, system specs:

Phenom ii x4 965c3
Gigabyte 790xta-ud4
4x2gb G-skill F3-12800CL9D-4GBNQ 1600mhz
Corsair 650tx power supply
Hyper 212+
Sapphire Vapor x 5770 1gb
Kingston 64gb SSD
Hitachi Deskstar 1tb
Lite-on Blu Ray drive
1tb external
500gb external
1x 80mm fan
4x 120mm fans

Recently I have been running into a usb driver problem. Everything was running fine and then all of a sudden after a restart all the usb ports would not function. I can go into device manager and click uninstall on all of them and they will work just fine after the restart re-installs them automatically, but then they fail with error code 10 again when I restart a second time. So basically they will only work once, and then I have to redo it every time I restart. I have tried deleting the lower filter entries in the registry as per Microsoft support team personnel on a forum post of the same problem and this did not work either. I am starting to think that my mobo is now bad. I am running all of the most current drivers.

I listed my externals and everything because someone said sometimes issues like these are due to not enough power, but I doubt that is the case. I am running both 120mm cpu fans, front 80mm and front 120 off the mobo and the rear 120 off the molex.

The problem seemed to start after I installed 4 more gb of ram to fill all four slots in my mobo, but I am not sure if that could have been the cause.

1. Would putting the system disc in and selecting repair possibly install these drivers properly again?
2. Would a full system format and clean install fix it? (definitely rather not do this)
3. Would screaming and yelling at it help? hahaha.

Thank you all very much in advance for your help.

Forgot one last thing. Right now I am running bios F2, and there was a new revision F3 from a couple weeks ago.

Should I try to install that? I am just nervous that I will update the bios wrong and brick my computer. Sorry for all the questions but this is my first build and I have never flashed bios before, so how hard is it to do?

Thanks again.

Flashing the BIOS is real easy. Usually you just burn the update to a CD and boot off it. Other than updating the BIOS I am trying to figure out what you would do... maybe one of the USB devices is bad. Have you tried experimening with the devices? Maybe only plug in the mouse and keyboard and see if it is happening. Also are you using any USB that you connected to the pins on the motherboard? Like a front panel USB? Make double sure you connected front USB to the USB connectors and not the firewire. Believe it or not, I've seen it a good 4-5 times.

Slayn, thanks a lot for the response. I could double check to make sure that the front USB's are correct when I get home on that but I believe it is correct. The ones that were not working were the back panel ones straight out from the mobo. All of the USB stuff runs perfect once I delete the USB drivers and let windows install them automatically on reboot and my external HD works on my other computers. I will try having only my bluetooth usb for my mouse and keyboard and see if that does anything.

I even tried restoring to 5 days before the problem happened from the windows backup system image file I have run every week but that did nothing. I just find it very odd that the problem popped up out of nowhere after the system running flawlessly for a month.

Could it be possible that installing the 2 extra sticks of ram could have done something? I really doubt it, but maybe I could try pulling those out and seeing if that does anything.

It seems that reinstalling windows might be the only way, and who knows if that would do anything.

Finally, one last question on the BIOS update. Is there any way to make a backup or anything so that if I mess it up it just reverts back? My board has the dual BIOS on it and I believe it said I could save a backup to my HD, but I will double check when I get home.

Thanks again

Alright, so just a quick update. I have installed the latest bios, pulled out my added ram, pulled out all but my bluetooth dongle for the mouse and keyboard, and checked to make sure my front panel usb header was correct and nothing has worked so far. I have spent the last few hours searching the net to no avail.... wondering at this point if this might be either a clean install type of deal or an RMA.

Just tried installing the new chipset drivers and that didn't seem to work.

Thanks a lot for the idea though. I am still waiting to hear back from Gigabyte. Might try to RMA my board if it doesn't end up working.

So does this sound to you guys at this point like a hardware or software issue? I am just trying to figure out if I should try to reinstall windows, which would suck or if I need to try to RMA a board.

if it works (even though temporarily) after an uninstall/reinstall of the device.... it sounds like a software issue of sorts.

Alright, so I think I came up with a decent way to test doing a fresh windows install without altering what I currently have.

If I were to unplug the current hd's in my case, stick in a new one that is fresh with nothing on it and install windows on that, then if it doesn't couldn't I just pull that hd out, and plug back in my normal drives and everything would be as normal? Or would installing the OS on a different HD then somehow corrupt or reregister that license key to the new hard drive and mess up my current setup?

Tollhouse and Slayn I very much appreciate your responses, I am learning all of this stuff and it seems everyone on the forum is always so knowledgeable and helpful, and I really appreciate your time.

Cheers!
