black screen at start up - screen in sleep mode.

hey,
the other day i started up my computer but the screen stayed in sleep mode while starting up. i know it booted successfully because my little de-bug screen shows that it has and i can also here windows log on screen sounds. could the be a problem with my video card? its a HD5770 only about 1 month old. is it possible my PSU is not powerful enough? its rated at 450w with a max of 550w.
got any ideas?

cheers

Your PSU should be fine if it can actually put out that power. What brand is it?

But if its booting properly, its likely not the PSU. Are you certain your plug in the videocard is plugged in? Have you tried turning the monitor on/off?

PERTH WOO! =D

Without knowing your full system specs I couldn't say if its the PSU's fault. Mind you I installed a 5770 in my mates compy which only has a 350w PSU so you should be fine.

If you're getting no visuals is probably monitor / card / cord like you said. If possible try testing a different monitor, card and cord (not all at the same time).

Does your mobo have another PCIE slot? If so try put your card in there. Have a look for any burns / damage on the underside of the card while you're doing it.

If all else fails... RESET THE CMOS! lol.

Try a different DVI cable.

yeah it was only $70 :/ but it has been doing fine. i am thinking of upgrading to a corsair 650w modular but i am short for cash at the moment so it probably wont happen anytime soon. i found out it was a dodgey DVI cable, thank god it wasn't my card! lets hope it doesn't start accruing again.

Do not forget to throw that cable out. I have had 2 DVI cables go bad on me...forget to throw them out... they get mixed back in rotation and the black screens come back lol.

Cheapest solution of the lot! If only that was always the case

As to the PSU, i recommend Corsair highly! Always go bigger that what you need to future-proof.
