USB Mic Not Working Win7 64 bit

I've checked quite a few sites and postings and this seems to be an ongoing problem in Windows 7 period. Purchased a creative Fatal1ty USB Gaming Headset HS-1000 and the cans actually work fine and have from day 1. My issue is that the mic will not work and apparently is not quite recognized by the OS.
I've tried every posted suggestion and I am completely at a loss here. I've contacted Creative (FWIW) and god only knows when they'll get back to me. If this is an issue anyone here has dealt with i'd really appreciate your two cents on how you may have resolved a similar issue.
In the sound profile the headset is checked green but the mic part is faded out as though it's not recognized or installed. I've used different USB ports, uninstalled and re-installed the drivers, updated the drivers from the manufacturers website and performed every trick except the disappearing handkerchief. Any thoughts or ideas please chime in, I'd appreciate the help.

Hey there!

First off, welcome to the OC community.

Just your lucky day, I have W7 x64 at home with a USB mic.

Unfortunately, it's not a headset based unit, it's a pro-sumer recording Mic. But, it's USB based and it works with my setup. I'm guessing you're using Vent or TS and it's for gaming, right? Let's get into what program/game/app you're using it with and we can go from there.

PS -- Crazy week, might be a delay before I reply again. But I'll be back!!

Thank you for the fast reply Jmtyra. Actually I'm using Steam for gaming but the headset (Creative Fatal1ty) mic isn't working in ANY applications at all. I'm simply using the Steam server and trying to run Left4Dead 1 & 2. I even tried setting the mic up in the Windows Speech recognition feature and nothing at all.
