FF14 - Impressions and who is playing?

Ok…. so… I thought I would make a new thread for FF14 besides the benchmarking beta thread.

I purchased a CE of FF14 and have only played very little (killed a few mobs and completed one Questleave). After playing WoW for so long it is taking me sometime to get used to the controls and UI (I keep hitting the stupid spacebar thinking I can jump, but fail miserably). BTW I never played beta.

My first impressions are:

-Beautiful
-No jumping makes me sad, but I can deal with it
-I feel lost (but that’s because I know no one playing the game and have to learn a new UI and system)
-More to come later after a full weekend of playing the game

Who is playing?
And what are your impressions?

Me and my GF pre ordered the CE and am going to pick it up today after work. I am pretty concerned about dropped 160 bucks on the game so early so I hope it's worth it!

When you say no one is playing does that mean the world is empty with no one logged on?

Waaaiit? No jump?

11 didn't have it either.

I'm interested to see what people think. I may pick it up as I really enjoyed 11.

I am picking it up in the next month. My wife really enjoyed beta, I loved 11 so didnt bother playing much of beta. The wife has a pretty good idea of what we like and dislike.

I wasnt going to play it anyways, but I dont' think I could play a MMO without jump. I can't say how much time I have spent jumping around in circles, it probably amounts to days or weeks :P

So far their have been ups and downs, finally learning that i can repair my low level shield that still cost a ton of gil with little carpentry skill alleviated a bit of my anxiety as a broken shield after less than a day of grinding with little income was not a fun concept. It does however seem that you really need a guild especially to prosper during such an early time with so many combines needing things from every profession

Alot of FFXIV players woot!..

Just got my preordered CE from my friend. Wasn't going to play FFXIV but decided to give it a try and damn.. I don't regret getting it. It's a huge improvement from FFXI and so far I'm loving it. Though I wish they made the UI a bit more user friendly.. And JUMP!... But other then that.. Crafting and such is still oblivious to me ..

I HATED FF11. Anyone think I might enjoy FF14?

I played FF11 on opening day, so I know a bunch changed over the years. But there were a few things that made me quit FF11

- The GRIND! Dear god, the game was such a grind! Took way too long just to his 18 ( or was it 20? ) to be able to do the quests that would allow you to ride a chocobo.

- The MONEY grinding! This was worse than trying to gain EXP. If you wanted to work on your fishing, you had to buy a rod and bait. But you couldn't make any money, as you spent all your money from selling the fish, to make up the cost of the bait!

Same thing with carpentry ( or whatever they called it ). You could collect just enough wood to cover the price of the axe that just broke.

Drove me insane. Couldn't build up money for the life of me.

And most of all...

- BEING FORCED TO PARTY! I *REFUSE* to play a game where I am FORCED to party. I mean that in the literal sense. After level 10, you HAD to party. The beginning monsters didn't give enough EXP, and the monsters in the next area were way to hard to fight alone. Many times, I just want to solo. That, and I hate spending a bunch of time looking for a damn party.

That being said, I played EVE-online for nearly a year straight. I actually enjoyed the guild system ( called Corporations ). It actually felt like everyone was working together, making the guild stronger. It felt like each person was contributing to the GUILD. Most MMO's, guilds tend to feel like nothing more than a large social party, that only works to better each individual. They feel like guild are just a way to get specific equipment and materials from others. They hardly ever feel like their a real group working together for the entire guild. I loved Eve-Online because it wasn't just another chat box. We worked together to make the guild PHYSICALLY stronger ( quite literally, once we got our own station running ).

Is FF14's guild system anything like eve's? Or does it just feel like the same old guilds in most MMO's. A place to mostly chat, quickly organize a party, and trade, but has no feeling of true cohesion. Also, does it seem like FF14 will pretty much require a guild for one to advance their character? Or is the game solo-able?

When I played Eve-online for nearly a year, I was a miner. I spent most of my time shooting lasers at asteroids to collect minerals. Most boring profession ever. And I loved it. I love mining, and collecting wood, minerals, fishing...etc. But I HATE World of WarCraft's style, where there are small, random "harvest points". I like sitting in an area, and mining ( or collecting. )

What's the Mineral / wood / basic material collecting system in this game? Is it the WoW style? Or is minerals, and ores actually in mines ( or some other dense location ) where I don't have to walk for 10+ minutes to find a "harvest point"? Or is most of the basic materials collected as monster drops ( which I'm not a big fan of either. Save for pelts and such to make leather armors and the like ).

Is the crafting system any good?

Think I might actually enjoy the game? Or should I avoid it, and just keep waiting for Star Wars: The old Republic?

sorry for all the questions. But I feel like I got burned by FF11. And I have no interest in letting Square-Enix burning me again with FF14.

I played FFXI since opening day as well and it was about the same that made me quit the game years ago.

I just started FFXIV and so far the improvements from FFXI is too much to list and to say FFXI was it's predecessor is a laugh. FFXIV is a whole new game on it's own with a way better battle system compared to FFXI.

1. You aren't forced to party (so far I haven't had to yet anyways), but when you are doing questleves you are able to choose the difficulty of the leves which determines the difficulty of the monster(s) you kill (if they are battleleves) varying from 1 star (Solo), 2 star (Cant remember what it says here), 3 Stars (Party), 4 Stars (Troop), and 5 Stars (Legion). So basically if you want to do higher difficulty, you may want to party. And of course the rewards differ according to the difficulty selected.

2. As far as money goes.. I can't really put my finger on it just yet but feels like any MMO I play will always have a farm to it lol..

3. Crafting I have not yet figured it out myself yet (been trying to but with the new UI it's kinda hard to and somewhat not user-friendly ).. Though it seems similar to FFXI in how you place your materials into the ingredient list box and hit synthesize and as long as you have the correct ingredients it'll synthesize with a chance to critical for a better item too?

4. I think you will get a much different feel from FFXIV compared to FFXI as I felt the same way you did before but once I played FFXIV, it was completely different than what I thought it would be or what I saw from videos/gameplays. I did not regret getting the game myself. The major thing that concerned me was if the battle system was as slow paced as FFXI, and dear god it wasn't.. It's pretty fast paced now and I love it.

Hmmm, sounds like the game may be quite a bit better than FF11.

oooh yeah, the slow battle system. I KNEW I was forgetting something in my list. Yeah, FF11's slow battle system drove me insane. It should not take 2 minutes to kill a damn rabbit.

I'll probably look at some Youtube video's, and check out the Official FF14 forums ( and the GameFaqs FF14 forums as well ). See If I may actually enjoy this one.

Definitely worth checking out, my friends that were skeptical themselves (former FFXI players as well) about FFXIV tried it and likes it alot.

Though I still can't figure out how the heck to get localleves for crafting x_x

There is alot to cover here, at 15glad, 8botany, 9alch, 8blacksmith,5 miner, 8 carpenter, 3 marauder and 8alch I would have to say I am enjoying the game for the most part. Bar out the many simple things the game needs, bank, AH, item linking and a few others

The grind: This one has been interesting so far, Glad got to 13 and started going painstakingly slow with finding decent mobs to grind rough, leve's are also rewarding very little

The money grind: Not too bad so far, it was rough day 1 and 2 as I needed a shield for Gladiator and had to scrape up 25k to drop on it. now I am sitting at 220k

Partying: Possibly not necessary for leveling however it does leave a short list of mobs to grind on in each level range. Don't expect to defeat any blue con mob. IE Aldgoat nannies will mash a solo player in the level 10 range.

Crafting/Gathering: you have abilities to point you to gathering spots and can gather up to 5 times on a single point in your level range higher points you get one chance and it's harder. other people can harvest the same point without depleating your tries. (Did I mention it's a mini game) Crafting isnt too bad however items can take awhile to make because you will need to craft more than one sub item to make it. my sword needed a blade (blacksmith) hilt (carpentry) animal glue (alchemy)

Corporations/Guilds: you have both linkshells and companies in FFXIV, I am still shopping for one for myself. However it is easily noticed that you will need one as different gear needs different professions to repair it, NPCs can repair to ~50% along with needing items from many professions to craft an item in your craft.

Lastly it looks like you may be able to solo to endgame however many cues point towards needing to work with others in order to make your life easier on the trip there.

Thanks for the Info! Hmmm, the mining / gathering doesn't sound TOO bad. At least your ability points you to the mining spots. So while you may have to travel a bit to get to the next spot, at least you know where it's at.

Also, is it true that the UI is pretty setup for a Controller / Gamepad? I heard everything is pretty much menu based, and that the mouse is pretty much useless, as you still have to hit ENTER to initiate a chat with an NPC. Is this true? If so, I have a PS2 to USB adapter I use, so i can use my PS2 controller on emulators, and specific PC games.

I also heard that the Auction house kinda sucks at the moment, and that there seems to be little instructions on how to do specific things, and people kinda have to read forums, or ask out loud in game. Is this true? Or are the people saying this dumb, and that they need to RTFM?

Gonna have to see if anyone I know has any friend codes. I might want to give this a try.
