I've been in hospital for 3 weeks, someone with the key (maintainence i think) decided to help themselves to 11k of computer gear - twice. The main system that is gone:

intel q8200 o/c to 3.06ghz
2x 2gb ddr2 ram
radeon 4870
and all the other not as important stuff.

Can you compare any i7 cpu's to the q8200? i5 or below screams "mid-range" to me. I pretty much want to have the same system as before, just with a 50% performance increase. I was also thinking of going with a gf gtx 470 or 480. I'd really like it to last for 5 year, like my old p4 3ghz + gf 6800 did.

I5 is a lot better than the Q8200 but the i7 is a lot better than the i5 due to Hyper Threading. For the video card I would recommend a 6870 or wait till the 69xx comes out. 5970 is now $500 on Newegg which is a lot better than the GTX 480 and GTX 580.

To each his own on GPU choice. I was just letting him know its $440. I would rather have a single card/gpu than any SLI/Crossfire setup (which is what the 5970 is). One doesnt need more than that for 1920x1080.

The i5 750 paired with a GTX580 would kick serious pixels compared to an i7 with a lesser GPU.
Hyper threading has little use for gaming.

Give us your proposed budget and I will come up with something awesome for you...

HT is useless for gaming (at least for now), but for all CPU realated tasks like video rendering will be at least 50% faster. 5970 is crossfire but it's performance trumps the GTX 580 and 480 so why spend more on less. All these cards will max but for future purposes a 5970 will last a long while. Then you get a 5870 for cheap later on for Triple GPU's or another 5970. You should though wait for the 69xx cards to come out. Prices will drop and your choices will widen greatly. WAIT!!!!!!

What about a 6870? Through some sort of anomaly, I can actually get one of those $100 cheaper than a 5870. As for the cpu, I can get a 1156 i7 (870) for about 30% more than the i5 (760) - the only thing turning me off an i7 was the motherboards costing almost double, but a 1156 i7 sounds very tempting...

The 6870 is a very good card, although AMD decided to change the naming convention from the previous generation. So the 6870 is really the upgrade to the 5770.

Like I said: Whats your budget?

Well, I only really want to spend about $500 more than the insurance co. will pay out. From talking to their supplier, they would see a core i5 as equivelant to a q8200 these days ("new for old" insurance policy). So, how much would:

q8200
mid-range 775 motherboard
radeon 4870
2 500gb hard drives, 2 750gb hard drives (sata)
average case and psu
24" monitor

be worth to buy equivelants of today? Basically the answer to that +$500.

Well, push the i5 750. Its a win CPU. Use the $500 on the GPU and bless yourself with the 580
