First Build in 3 Years

Hello everyone, Brand new to the forums and finally being able to get a new system built, figured I'd learn more about overclocking and it's potentials by using this forum. Just wanted to share my current build in process and would love to hear feedback on any past experience with similar setups and what not. Thanks!

ANTEC 1200 Case
Corsair 750TX
Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE
Mushkin Radioactive DDR3 1600 6-8-6-24
EVGA GTX 470
2 WD Caviar Black 640GB in Raid 0

Still researching on aftermarket cooling and will use the step up program EVGA offers to eventually obtain one of the 580 video cards.

Suggestions or comments greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance!

In your thread in the Motherboard forum I recommended the 890GPA (890GX) motherboard.

My bad Earthdog, I didn't know if posting feedback on the entire build would of been suitable in just the motherboard section. Didn't want to pose any issues over there. If it would be better to remove the other in the motherboard section feel free too.

Thanks

Excellent setup. The major issue I foresee is that your videocard does not exist. 6870 is the highest 68XX series Radeon card. Worth noting the 5870 is slightly faster and the 5970 is much much faster, both at considerable price increments.

Also, keep in mind that a larger hard drive, while larger, also has poorer seek times than a smaller capacity hard drive. Something like a WD Velociraptor which spins at 10,000RPM and has a smaller platter and lower seek times as well as a higher transfer rate, or better yet a quality SSD would be a good idea to use for your OS, virtual memory, and important game installs. Then you can use a bigger, slower drive for your media collection... and whatever you have 1TB of.

Even if you were planning to raid - 0 those 1TB drives keep in mind that doing the same with SSDs or Velociraptors will = higher speed.

Have you seen the NH-D14 yet? The box is the size of your head. Hilarious. Huge, huge cooler.

RAID for speed isn't worth it now that the prices of SSDs have come down. Spending the extra $30 for a 60GB vertex 2 will give you a much bigger increase then the 2nd 1TB.

@Theocnoob: The 6970 will exist on Monday. Rumored initial price is $450.

Thanks for your feedback, Yes the Noctua HSF is insanely huge, Saw a few live reviews of it. If you don't think I'll get that big of a performance boost with those two hard drives, I may need to look more into the SSD, Just not too familiar with them and don't really know anything actually.. I just hear they're fast but also a lot more expensive then most standard hard drives. Guess I have some more reading to do... =P thanks again

An SSD is just a physical drive that uses NAND flash instead of a rotating metal platter to store information. They have a much higher cost per gigabyte. Some people have said they do weird things if you try to defragment them.

Some people say? They do. You do not defrag SSD's!!!
