I'm currently connected to my uni network and am trying to play wow, this works fine for my flatmate in the next room but somehow when i try to play my latency just randomly jumps to 5000ms every 10 seconds or so, its just unplayable really.

This is my traceroute

I figure 11 and 15 seconds is a pretty long time so i guess they must be the problem. Is there any way that i can bypass these hosts? (without contacting ISP)

Are you both playing on the same realm? If not the realm servers might be hosted at different physical locations and thus internet traffic to the two servers is different.

If it is normally lower and jumps up every once in a while i sounds more like a a traffic issue on the network. Check your computer and you roomates computer to make sure you don't have any programs that are uploading or downloading a lot while you play.

5000 is WAY to high for it to be location based. I am in AZ and I can communicate with servers in Germany at under 700ms.

Go google Leatrix Latency fix. Fixes most latency problems. also the program WTFAST, connects you to the closest server, not as in the WoW server, but the physical connection server.

Im in AZ and play on nordrassil, and I get 40ms connecting to a server in Washington.

It should be noted that the leatrix latency fix is going to increase the workload on your CPU. You might see a small drop in fps. It does work though. Dropped my latency from 200ish to just around 100.
