Does Opteron 240 work with Socket 939 or is it Socket 940 only?

...and does old Registered RAM work on desktop motherboards?
 
It's socket 940 only. The Opteron 1xx are the only S939 ones.

And no, registered RAM will not work on a standard desktop board. In the context of AMD systems, it will only work with S940 boards, and likewise, S940 boards will only work with registered memory.
 
Opteron 240 has a 7x multiplier and it runs at 1.4 GHz. Does it overclock much to speak of?
 
You might search the TheQuadfather's (The Quadfather?) stuff. I know he's done a couple of multi-CPU servers but it's been awhile. I can't remember if he OC'ed them or not or even what they were ...
