Question FAH Questions

I have been doing a little reading about the folding@home deal for a while now and had a few questions.

I know that it states that you aren't supposed to run the program on any computer other than one that you own or have explicit rights to. I work at a county job as their IT Tech and was wondering if I could use our workstations to fold, based off of the privacy rights and agreements of the software developer.

Along with this also comes questions of the performance hit that the workstations would take. Mostly the computing that is done is all database work, so it isn't anything to intensive. Still I wouldn't want the system to be bogged so that our users couldn't use them. From what I understand the program only uses idle clock cycles, which leads me into my next question.

EDIT: Just happened to remember this questions as I was trolling around elsewhere. I know that this will come up. How do I quell the concerns of data security? The database that I we work with does hold sensitive information and I know that one of the first things to come up will be the security end. I can quote the line from the guide that I read earlier about how secure it was but I am not sure if that will satisfy. Would there be any reason to have any concern about security?

Everyone here logs in and out many times throughout the day. I know that the process won't run if the computer is in standby or hibernate but what about if it is logged off? My guess would be that a user would have to be logged in. EDIT: That being said from what I was reading there are only versions that have a program that must run. Are there any versions available that run in the background? ie. Where the user couldn't see that it was happening? or is there a way to have it run only during non-business hours? That would serve the same purpose.

On the note of trying it on this scale has anyone else given it a try? Just looking for a reference. If it is something feasible that I can pull off I have to have all of the facts straight and ready to go before I start stirring up dust.

As many others have stated about their power bill, I would fold at home but I am sure that my power would have to be cut off every other month. That would make me not so much with the happy. I saw a thread earlier with some talk of possibly looking into tax deductions/non-profit organization. Has there been any more buzz over this subject?

Thanks for any and all info ahead of time! Sorry for all of the questions.

If you have permission from the owner of the company or the manager then I don't see why not(especially with the cooperation of the IT staff)

What are the specs of the stations?

All of our systems should match closely to that. That is a quick DXdiag from my system.

that dual core should complete smp's(not bigadv's) but will still net points.

e2180 @3.3ghz will get 3100ppd roughly but you aren't overclocked and I wouldn't mess with office equipment like that. Stock you are looking at 950-1800 ppd for that cpu(if it's not being used heavily for other things)

I might be wrong though.

If you do not have permission in writing from the county administrator responsible for the department, DO NOT DO IT. Even with written permission of the department head, in a government environment, you are putting your job at risk and the department heads job as well. One employee telling a county commissioner that there's some FahCore_a3 process eating 99% of cpu cycles on the all the county's computers might get you and your department head fired, especially with politics involved.
We've had members lose their job over what they thought was authorized installation. Change bosses or have the issue kicked above the immediate boss and authorization may be meaningless even if in writing.

Even if the output is low that would be fine. I am looking at doing this network wide, talking about 150ish comps. I figured that the idea was to have as many comps processing the jobs as possible. Thanks for the info so far. I know that I have seen ChasR on other posts.

Speak of the devil I was just posting about you.

Well, we are a country agency but yet we operate separately. If that makes any sense, I am still trying to figure it out myself. The truth of the matter is that there is no one else, aside from myself, around that would know what a cpu cycle or FahCore_a3 process is. Not to make light of your advice. I am just the only IT person that really is around.

So I am guessing that it is pretty intensive on systems then? Obviously if it impacts performance then I am not going to be able to pull it off. That was one of the biggest concerns. Our users already seem to bog down some systems just using the database. Not sure how they manage it but they do.

I agree with ChasR, don't do it as all levels of government are trying to cut costs like crazy these days and you will be one of them. I do admire your initiative though, but just just say no.

It doesn't matter if they know what it is or not, if it's using cpu resources it can be reported and be considered malware or unauthorized access to equipment and if tracked down(most likely it would be) you and others involved would be at risk of losing your job.

My advice is to contact who is in charge of the office and see who you would need to talk to in regards to this matter. Who manages the computers? Who owns the office, who pays your paychecks, who pays their paychecks, etc.......

Yes it is pretty taxing on stock computers that are being utilized for work activities. I would advise not to attempt it.

Well, sounds like never mind is gonna be the right answer. Thanks for the replies. Such a sad waste though. Thanks again!

I saw this in your system specs:

System Manufacturer: LENOVO
Are these systems all laptops? Folding can create a LOT of heat in a laptop, and if not set up to pause when on battery power, will eat through battery life in no time.

It's not just your job, but the reputation of Pande Group and Stanford University at stake here. If you are the responsible party and answer to no one about what goes on the county computers (the county does own them I presume), you MIGHT be OK.

I'd be very hesitant to install smp folding on a laptop I didn't own. THe fan running full speed will be audibly noticeable and many users block the air intakes on their lap, sofa, or bed, causing thermal throttling, which isn't good. If not run 24/7, the 2.0GHz allendale won't make the smp deadlines. If run 24/7 each machine will make between 1000 and 1325 ppd depending on the WU. THe 6.30 client can be installed as a service so that it runs with the machine on without a login. If you chose to install FAH on a fleet of laptops, you'd probably be best off to run v6.30 without the -smp flag. THis will run uniprocessor WUs on the machine, using one cpu core. The thermal load will be 50% less and thus less noticeable. The deadlines can easily be met running 9/5. Unfortunately you'll only make 200 to 300 ppd per machine (running 24/7). 150 of them will make less ppd than a single i7 running -bigadv WUs.

No, all our workstations are made by Lenovo. We do also have some Lenovo laptops but I wasn't worried about those since they aren't on most of the time.

Well, the agency itself owns the computers. As far as installing and running programs on the computers we(the agency) decides what goes on then and what runs. hence why I said that we are separate. The only interaction that we really have with the county/state is with our internet. They run a filter on emails that get sent to and from.

The more that we talk it over though the more it sounds like a bad idea. It sounds like even though it can be set to run as a background process that it will take up to much system resource while users are on. Is there a way that I could set it to run in a set time frame? ie 6pm-6am

As I keep asking questions. Sorry I am just generally curious.

You would have to set a scheduling client up to turn them on and off on each machine, and even then you might be cutting it close to meet deadlines before it shuts the process down.

Assuming 100% authorization, why not use 2x Standard clients? It seems to give up resources much more freely than an SMP client. ChasR touched on this, but I think he still thought you were using laptops.
