Installing SSD

Trying to Install a SSD in a system. The system can see the drive, but when OS install gets to selecting drive part it does not see the drive. I have tried Ide and AHCI same for both. Do I need to install SSD in a system running and format first?

Have you tried formatting to the proper filesystem with gparted?

You should put it in another system and do that... (enable it)

Is this the same as making it a Active partition?

Not sure try it. The more I think about it, the more I think thats not the issue. But its worth a try as its just a plug and change.

Gparted is a light linux install that runs from a CD and has partitioning/erasing options built in. Problem with that is I dont know if it aligns the SSD properly like a format from within windows install does.

Making Partition Active did the trick. It allowed me to install OS and it boots to it with no other drive installed. Any other tips are welcome as these are all new to me.

What SSD do you have? Size? Do I smell PCmark?

To be honest, because of the way SSD's work, I keep mine no greater than half-way full. They use a technology that makes it no cell is written to more than the others. IE:

Cells 1 through 9 have one write cycle. Cell 10 doesn't yet. The controller won't write to cells 1 through 9 until cell 10 has been written for the first time.

Keeping that in mind, the more open space you have, the longer life you will get out of the SSD.

Is this just going to be an OS drive? My 60gb is just for OS and right now, it's just under half-way full. I haven't seen a lick of performance degradation. I need to put one of my good OS's on another partition and do some PC mark.

I have 2 of them, and have not decided how to use them yet. Was just testing today.

You should be able to put up some decent PCMark numbers with those two in Raid 0. The Callisto is a fast drive . Gotta love the Sandforce.
