can't get minecraft server on the WAN

I recently built a server and am currently trying to get minecraft on the internet. I portforwarded the ip address, but when I try to access it, it says connection refused
I don't believe the server is blocking it, and I don't think there is anything in the router doing so.
is there anything else

Server is running Ubuntu 10.10
Router is a netgear

I should only have to type in my ip address assoicated to my router right?

The server is likely not blocking it, the router probably is. What ports are needed for this application and do you have them forwarded on your router?
