socket 478 heatspeader stuck to heatsink

I couldnt figure out why this old system was overheating and now i know. My question is since the heatspreader got stuck and then fell off when i removed the heatsink is the cpu toast it powers on but freezes frequently?

I have a bunch of chips that i could use. Is there a way to reattach the heatspreader to the cpu or should i just toss it in the trash?

The heatspreader shouldnt affect the CPUs performance unless it damaged the die when it was pulled off. You can actually gain a little cooling power by removing the IHS and having actual contact w/ the die itself.

Reattaching the IHS wont help performance. If you are having issues /w the CPU with it off, something may have been damaged. If you are positive its the CPU, Id throw a difference one in.

yeah thanks doz i plan to play with it this weekend. It could be the motherboard for the fact that its old and is an ECS (junk) but i am more leaning towards replacing the CPU in general i have about 6 478 cpus.
