modify Gforce4 mx to gforce4 Ti

Hi,

If found somthing very interesting. It seems to be possible to change/upgrade your gforce mx440 (about 189 euro) into any other gforce type. (max 500+ euro) It does require some soldering.

Just follow these links.

I`m not very technical and its not clear wich chip needs to go where on wich brand video card.

Never the less.
Maybe there are people who have more exp in this and are willing to share there knowledge in this forum.

Iwab

ps ill will keep to post more info if i find something.

Hi,

I have also read somewhere thats its not sure if adjusting gforce settings will influence system stability. The gforce4 mx and the g4ti could be different athoug they use the same chip

This is what i read somwhere else

Don't do it if you require a stable platform. The mod only changes what the cards BIOS reports to the OS not the card itself.
The GeFore4MX range are based on GeForce3 core chips! Only the Geforce4Ti series have true GeForce4 chips with the extra shader pipe.

Not sure what to believe or what is possible.

ps maybe its posible to upgrade an ti version to another ti
or an mx4 version--> a higher version. With less risk on system stabillity.

The mx version has no infinte ii engine, double vertex shading, not sure if this is implemented(but not activated) in the mx chip.

They're totally different chips. That's impossible. (GF4xm and GF4ti that is)

TruckChase is right there are no pixel shaders in the MX, and I do believe it is missing a few other things, not quite positive on exactly what, but I think there is a difference in vertex shaders and pipelines too

Nope, you can't do that. GF4MX and GF4TI feature completely different chips. The article referred to desribes modding the MX into Quadro4, not TI.

low ti version to a higher version should be possible

At least thats what i`m reading from xbits web site.

I agree thats it not posible to get a Ti out of an Mx nvidai card..

There are three spots on the pi marked with "0", "1" and "2". We managed to get the following working resistor combinations:

If one resistor stands in "0" position, another one – in "2" position, then the card is identified as GeForce4 Ti4600.
If one resistor stands in "0" position, another one – in "1" position, then the card is identified as GeForce4 Ti4400.
If there is no resistor in "0" position, and one resistor only in "1" position, then the card is identified as GeForce4 Ti4200.
On the reverse side of the card there is a more interesting layout bit:

Like everyone else said, turning a MX into a Ti is a impossible task. Soldering jumpers will not change the fact that the MX is a enhanced GF2 chip with no pixel shaders or DX8.1 support. Hell, a GF3 has more bells & whistles than a GF4MX.

However it does seem possible to change the Ti4600 into a Quadro4. The usefulness of this mod is alittle beyond me though, unless you can mod a Ti4200 into a 4600. That could be useful to those on a budget.
