another "is my drive bad" thread

I searched the threads but couldn't find an answer to my question so I posted another one.

I just moved from Georgia back to Illinois temporarily. When I plugged my external eSATA drive in it told me that it couldn't read the drive and would need to format it. WHAT!? I have over a TB of movies backed up to it... I tried to connect it via USB, no luck. Tried running a checkdisk, it stated that it couldn't read the drive. Any thoughts?

and run some disk checks. There are some programs that can recover lost files as well in case the drive is on its way out. Be careful with some programs like MHDD which is awesome for diagnosing a hard drive but some of the tests are destructive and don't give much warning. I say start with getting the SMART data from the drive. If you can access this then it might give better feedback as to what is wrong and we can go from there.

If you go to the overview link on the left of the page it gives descriptions of each program on the disk.

Also you said you just moved? This is the first time you've tried using the drive? It is likely it could have taken a shock at some point and maybe a connector is loose. Try taking apart the drive enclosure and see if anything is unplugged or looks damaged. Or even reseat parts and see if it will work. Try a different port if you have more than one on the computer.

I would leave the drive sit. Do nothing until you have a enough space to back up any data you can recover from it. then check out the drive.

Save yourself some heart ache.. get another drive, use recovery software to pull any data off, and then try fixing the old drive.

Looks like the HDD took a crap. Possibly the PCB of the HDD took a crap.

FYI, for drives that are USB-based, it may be a bad USB port.

Put your HDD in the freezer overnight (in a sealed bag to prevent condensation).

It worked for me. At least until it warmed up and stopped again. Two freezes and I recovered 500GB.

UPDATE:
The drive is fine. I plugged it in internally and there are zero issues with it. Ran hdTune tests etc. Everything is 100% GO.

The problem comes when plug it into one of the two eSATA ports on my Mobo. The 1st port recognizes the drive at POST but it will not show in the OS. The 2nd slot also recognizes it at post, but will not progress past the windows boot screen unless I turn the drive off (it also will not shutdown with the drive on). If I plug the drive in via USB then it works fine. could this be a controller issue (FYI I'm in AHCI mode)? or is there likely something physically wrong with the ports...?

Sounds like the port or controller for that port.

My neighbor managed to insert the USB-B plug (the one that is almost square, but w/ 2 corners cut at 45°) into his external HDD incorrectly. He forced it in at a 90° rotation from correct. It blew the port or controller out. We tore apart the enclosure, and the HDD worked fine internally or in another external case he had.

So you think it is a problem with the case and not the ports on the Mobo?

It's hard to say for sure. You really need to test the HDD+Enclosure in another mobo and test a known working eSata device on your mobo to eliminate variables.
