is this a DANGEROUS quite hdd holder??

I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to having a quite PC and why bloody not!?

The other day I came across this

It's ment to silence your HDD. I really want to get one of these to add to my insanly quite PC, but I was reading along there site and they give warning about not adding HDD's higher than 7200 RPMs. I was going to put my new Maxtor 80Gb ATA-133 drive into it (not arrived yet), but I was wondering ...No panicing about the casing making my HDD go boom! I really really want one of these, they look cool too, but will having 133Mbs tranfer speed bunk up the temps dramatically? Or should this be safe enougth to use???

...I got a feeling things are going to get mighty hot

I wouldn't.

I had a removable harddrive carrier once, it had no foam, and had two fans in it. The harddrive lasted a little under a month before I rma'd it. Now that $50 dollar carrier sits under my desk keeping the dustbunnies company. The drive was an old ATA33 Maxtor.

The ONLY kind of enclosure that I'd use is the heatsink sandwich idea. Use two oversized aluminum or copper plates to sandwich the drive in between, then fill the sides with foam. You could even make the sandwiching plates with tabs to mount in a 5 1/4 bay that a rheobus is filling....more room for other stuff!

Just my .02 worth, If you do try it, let me know how it works out!

MY Maxtor 7200 rpm drives run hot enough as thes are. They are both using hdd coolers but they are still very warm to the touch. TO be honest i don't think it would make too much of a difference. I to this date am yet to hear one of my hdd. I don't think i would want to put anything more than a 5400 rpm in drive in one of those things. At least that was it wouldn't be such a risk.

maxtor has software which can control the acoustic levels of their newer drives, thats the best way to go. Craming ANY drive in one of those things isn't a good idea, although the outside casing *might* feel warm, from my own test of my maxtor drives, the controller chips on the board undeneath get upwards of 40c idling the drive and go almost to 60c when there is massive data transfers, And this is on 7200 rpm ide drives....imagine the temps of some 10,000 and the new 15.000 scsi drives. those removable bays aren't worth it.

just my opinion.
