My laptop ssd suddenly appears to be an unformated drive and of course won't boot into windows.

Is there any easy way to recover a such a drive, or do I have to reinstall windows from scratch?

if your drive has become unformulated magically you have bigger issues, sounds like ssd failure to me.

Perhaps you are right......it does seem to be working right now, as in it can be formated and files copied to it.

Suggesting to secure erase it, and run crystal disk info to capture the current smart data, could be useful if it starts acting up again to see any difference at those comparison.

+1

a good secure erase to start fresh and go from there.

but drives just shouldnt up and wipe themselves... so IMO something is up.

it has been happening a lot on the new sandforce based drives. just up and losing everything at random.

most people seem to be helped by the new firmware for the drives (check with drive manufacturer), but there seems to still be some issues with certain hardware combinations (like the p68 boards)

Yep, installed two firmware updates which apparently address this kind of issue. Hopefully that's an end to the drive disappearing!!

It seems good backups are double necessary with SSDs.
