Intel X79 chipset and Socket 2011 are ready for the desktop

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...-ready-desktop

I saw this link over at The Inquirer today. I know to take what they say with a grain of salt, but I found it a bit informative nonetheless.

As for me, I think my next major upgrade will be to a 990x on my current motherboard and wait to see how socket 2011 and AMD's Bulldozer pan out. I'll probably change platforms in 2012. I just can't justify having 64GB of RAM Hell, nothing I use even comes close to utilizing my 12GB I have now! That and I don't plan on going dual GPU ever. I'll probably get a 6990 if anything in the next coming 6 months or so. That's just my $0.02.

-Dave

I don't think you have to populate it w/ 64GB of RAM. 4x2GB or 4x4GB should be just fine.

Yeah I know I was just comparing the two platforms' RAM capacity.

Another good point is the mounting hole compatibility of the Socket 2011 with the present Socket 1366 for the cooling stuff, whether standard heat sink fans or sealed liquid cooling systems that even Intel is, for the first time, offering as kind of a standard choice for a high end desktop platform based on these new chips.
This is pretty awesome. From what I understand, LGA2011 is compatible with LGA1366 heatsinks because the mounting holes are the same.

And Intel is possibly shipping their high end SB-E chips with an all-in-one liquid cooling system?! Wow, that's a big step for Intel... I mean, their heatsinks have always been terrible so this is a step in the right direction if you ask me.

I'm excited to see what happens. I won't go out and buy both BD and SB-E right when they come out. I want to see what happens in benchmarks, and see what I need to keep the competition going on HWBOT.

Wait... If it says 64GB in the article does that mean 16GB DIMMs are coming out sometime soon?!

no, look at at the mobo closer. it has 8 slots, and i linked to an 8GB dimm(that isn't out yet) so 8*8= 64

I hope EVGA comes out with a board like the SR-2 for the SB-E workstation CPUs. That article explains that they are eight-cored, so imagine have 16 cores/32 threads...

hmm. i thought SB-E was only going to be 6 core max?

Here you go Ben:

First of all, no one seems to mind that the initial entries on the desktop side of the new socket do not enable all the eight cores present on the Sandy Bridge E/EP die. That privilege is, at the beginning, reserved for the workstation and server entries where Intel can charge far higher initial prices.

Exactly. They are never being moved down to desktop. Just for workstation.

That's what the SR-2 is. A workstation board. From what I understand, you can't take an i7 980X or an i7 920 and put it into an SR-2. They don't have the BIOS for it. You need to put a nice Xeon in it. Preferably a X5690 for ultimate sexiness.

okay. i knew you could use them dually because they only had 1 qpi. the xeons have 2. IIRC but i am not an expert. i can barely manage 1 pot for benching.
