Question Help with HD3650 AGP PSU

Hi to all,

As you can see the rig in my signature, it is very old but I am considering upgrading it with a HD3650 from Amaze or Powercolour (probably Amaze) but I was unsure if my PSU could run it. According to gpureview it takes less than 75w and on other forums around 5A. My PSU is 175w and has 3A on the 12v rail.

WOW

OK, please do not spend any money on this system man!

For very very little money you could replace this entire setup with something that would kill it in every way!

This system is like a blast from the past... I mean this stuff has got to be nearly 10 years old at this point...

I could give you advice on it but for every penny spent on this thing you could be saving towards something to replace it...

As said, do not spend the money on that card. You would need to buy a new powersupply (at a premium given that you have an SFF case), and you would pay a premium for an AGP card. I had a 3850AGP card at one point with a faster CPU (on my brother's PC before we replaced it) and the 3850 made zero difference as it was completely CPU-limited. Drivers were also a nightmare given how out-of-date they are for that card model.

Save up the money for a completely new system and do not waste it on piecemeal upgrades to the one you have currently. It will cost far, far less in the medium-term, and a modern low-mid end system will be considerably faster. Besides, given the age of your current system, it's only a matter of time until the board goes, or some other component, so you'd be replacing more old parts at a premium. Just buy new.

Ya, thats what I thinking too, I'd be suprised if some of the capacitors haven't started to leak already...

Thanks for the recommendations with this and yes I know how old my system is. I was considering a new motherboard and all the other parts but this upgrade is kinda free from a friend of mine, I was just unsure of whether I could make use of it. I followed the links on the 'Dual PSU How-Tos' thread and hooked up a 300w PSU with 12A on the 12v rail. Since the 3650 uses an extra power connector, would it be ok if 36w came from the 175w PSU & the rest from the 300w. The reason that I do not use the 300w PSU as my primary is because my motherboard is from an OEM which only accepts a 14-pin PSU.

Oh & I also found a 3.06ghz P4 on ebay for about $10 with shipping so I might buy that.

Not a bad move really. Which board & CPU did you get?

The voodoo2 reminds me of the good times. It only takes a few watts of power and doesn't really affect my performance.
