Hey guys/gals,

I am brand new to folding. I personally just really got on this site when I was building my new computer for bf3!!

I only cross this forum because I was like "WTF is team folding".

Then I spent a few hours reading over everything I could about it, and I was like wow, and felt that I have been missing out on something huge. (also after seeing the 27 rig rack... omg)

I realistically will only be gaming a few hrs a week if that.

With that said I would like to start folding on my computer! :attn:

I currently have a:

Case:
Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
Monitor: LG 50in 1080p 240hz

HDD: Intel 510 Series (Elm Crest) SSDSC2MH120A2K5 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Graphics Card: ASUS EAH6850 DC/2DIS/1GD5/V2 Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16

RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

Processor:Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 120mm & 140mm SSO CPU Cooler

Power Supply: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit - OEM

My biggest concern after reading was that there was a way not to send back the data that you worked on. How do I check this?

I would like to keep this going 24/7 and to only idle when I am using it for some bf3 action.

I will also be OC this to approx: 4.3-4.6 here in the near future. I am waiting for my video card 6950 to arrive also.

All in all I am pretty excited about this and ....go team 32!:comp:

After doing some more reading. I noticed that you can run multiple applications of F@H for each core you want to run it on?

V6 vs v7? Which one are you guys running? Any suggestions?

You don't want to do that. Run one SMP client. It will run a thread on each logical core. I run v6.34 in Linux or in a VM with a Linux guest if the machine must run Windows.

Most of us here still run the v6 client but v7 is very easy to setup. I suggest you try both and get a feel for each. v7 is the future. With a 2600K your best production is going to be with the CPU alone running SMP as ChasR said. You can also fold on your GPU but ATI cards are historically not very efficient at folding and at the same time GPU folding will slow down the SMP production due to the fact that the GPU core will also use CPU resources to keep the GPU fed with data.

See the Team 32 Super Sticky for a guide by ChasR that explains how to setup the v6 client for SMP work.

Hi Ultim8degen,

you have come to a great team to get started. These fellows really helped me get rolling. I will share my experience with a 5870 graphics board which is very silmilar to your 6850. When fahcore16 would actually fold--it is in early beta stage--I would get about 8000ppd. But is was very buggy for me and uncovered some weaknesses in my ATI chip which were not evident in normal gaming. IMHO, concentrate on squeezing as much PPD as possible out of that monster 2600k without folding on the gpu concurrently the 2600k should be good for up to 50k PPD on air with a modest OC. And they are a breeze to OC compared to my Deneb processor on my main rig.

GOOD LUCK, we will be here to help. And thanks for folding for 32.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I barely had enough time to get my folding started at home before I had to fly out to San Fran for the weekend.

I will be working on getting things rocking and rolling this week.

As of today I am sitting at..

points are a little low. I think you maybe folding on classic. When you setup FAH make sure you have -smp as one of your flags. A oc'ed 2600k even w/o quick return bonus (QRB) should be getting about 25-30k points per day (ppd). FAH SMP should do a work unit (WU) every five hours or so.

I downloaded my F@H from this link..

Is that the correct one?

finally got the right version installed. I was messing with v.6 and I couldnt get my user name to log in lol.

Downloaded v7 last night and with a little OC to 4.4ghz I am getting est. 35kppd-37kppd. :salute:

CPU is just destroying these WU!

Thanks again guys for all the help. Hoping to start putting up some real numbers this week :) And if I get this new job, I will make a monster of a folding machine!:attn:

Great! Yeah, the 2600k is a monster. When you catch your wind I would recommend v6 folding under VMware Ubuntu per ChasR's wonderful guide. My 2600k is locked at 4.4Ghz and I'm pushing 41k+ with modest 1600 memory sticks. Well worth the effort just don't want to throw too much at you right away.

Welcome to the team! It is great to read posts like this and believe me, we're very excited to have you.

I am pretty sure I just had my first error. Anyone know what is going on? This was a pretty long fold and It just seemed to not accept it. Any ideas?

I don't believe this is a problem on your end. Other folks running v7 have reported the same error, but no one has posted a solution or resolution.
Edit: Here is the answer to your issue: http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=19982

Work Server problem. Configuration error during Server upgrade.

Thanks for the code info. Updated my post.

Ok. I was just making sure I wasn't doing anything wrong.

Went home to expect a nice chunky PPD for that 8hrs of crunching and nada, such a sad day :/

I will most likely be building a folding rig by the new year. Just going to see what is out there and what I can get my hands on to do some high PPD. :comp:

About to break into the top 1000 tonight! lol :chair:

The threat meter is going to be high for some of you guys!!!:grouphug:
