hard drive full, need help another internal or external?

Can i install games on my external hard drive plug in via usb 2.0 and play them from that or will it be to slow? im thinking to slow?

my other question is, i have a 500 gig hard drive internal in my pc. Ive never had 2x hdd in there.

I have windows 7 64bit, So lets say I buy a 1tb hdd and put it in my pc case, do I have to install windows on that? or can I just plug it in, turn my pc on, and it will recognize it as another hard drive? and I can choose to install everything on that spare hard drive like games, and play strictly off that spare hard drive?

It will be too slow.

You don't have to install windows on your new drive. Windows will just see it as a new drive. Yes, you can choose to play strictly off that new one.

I would probably just move all my documents/pictures/music/video to the new HDD to clear room on the 500gb. That way all the programs/games can be on the C: drive. Some programs don't like being installed on a second HDD (although most don't mind). It also makes it easier in the future if/when you reinstall Windows.

To simplify things even more you might as well image the 500gb to the 1tb and just start using your 1tb as your main and just put data and what not on the 500gb. That is if your 1tb drive has similar performance as the 500gb.

So i can just buy a 1tb hdd add it in my pc, and start it up and I wont have to do anything in bios? and my pc will automatically see it?

Think im just going to buy a 1 tb HDD and start putting games on that.

Movies can be deleted and free up space on my 500gig, But I would like to keep the games.

Thanks for the advice guys!! appreciate it.

going to suck though having to delete the games I do have now and re install em on the other hard drive

No. They are somewhat faster, but not worth it nowadays.

Just get a SSD at this point if you want more speed for your OS/general applications. Any basic SSD will be faster than a 10K drive. You'd want one with at least 120GB. Crucial M4's and Intel 320's are good for the price. Avoid Sandforce-based SSD's for the time being due to firmware issues (supposedly they've fixed these, but I wouldn't count on it).

This is a better suggestion for your needs. Performance isn't fantastic, but it'll give you a bigger boost than a 10K drive.

Sounds like you want a drive with a lot of space so an SSD really is out of the question due to their price point. If you want a drive with a lot of space and speed I'd check out the new hybrid drives.

get a 1T or look for a 2T on sale, their speed will be faster than your 500G one likely over all, i would do as said, make the 1T or 2T as your main drive and use the 500G for storage you can use Acronis true Image home trial to do the copy over.

Would you put an OS on a 'green' 5400RPM 1TB or 2TB drive? I would suspect the access times to be a tad slower than 7200?

...then again, I haven't looked at 'snappiness' in HDDs in a while.

I wouldn't. Even the 'green' drives that don't spin down aggressively will have really slow access times compared to even a 7200RPM drive.

They're fine for media drives for the most part, although it can be kinda annoying waiting for them to spin up every time you need to use them. The slight power savings between a 'green' drive and a standard mechanical aren't really worth it unless you're looking at laptops or super low-power applications really.
