What do you do for a living? I work in a factory making oil seals for the automotive business and I'm going to college for IT.

I Supervised a top line construction Laser Manufacturing crew-Mergered/Downsized
I repaired and installed residential phone jacks/lines for AT&T--Mergered/Downsized
I Supervised a factory shift making custom foam parts, like those green Briggs and Stratton air filters--Mergered/Downsized
I installed AT&T u-verse from the fiber plant to the TV set--Downsized
Unemployed--4 months to downsizing on that!

Getting real freaking tired of Michigan!!!!!!!!!

I'm an engineer by training, machinist by trade. I have a degree in physics (focus in mechanical engineering), but very few companies are hiring engineers with no experience at the moment. There are so many experienced engineers out of a job in the south that companies can afford to be super picky about new hires.

I make anything from screws the size of your pinky finger to 10 ton gear drives for hydro-electric power plants. I run a couple of 20 ft. lathes and a CNC mill with a 16 ft. x 8ft. table and 7ft of vertical travel. I make really big parts.

I like my job OK. it pays the bills, but I would really like to get into my chosen field eventually.

Going to college for Computer Engineering, working part time at the colleges IT department. Spend some time listening to a professor explain how FPGAs work and then later that day explain to the professor that he can't open that PDF file because his laptop doesn't have Adobe Reader

Work in IT for state government. I handle everything (desktops, laptops, smartphones, tablets, printers, the servers.) The only thing I don't deal with are the desk phones. Ugh, too many hats to list really. I am the goto guy for everything.

With a fortune 500 company I spent 5 years doing desktop system administration, a couple years doing windows/active directory administration, and now with a medium size internet company I currently administer forum communities for a living. Work from home at equal compensation without corporate overlords is nice.

Community manager is the common job title for what I do, however it can mean very different things in different companies. I'm towards the more advanced end of the spectrum, the predominant role under my job title is a low level minimum wage sort of basic operations person. I am on the development and progressive end of the spectrum - a good read for my sort of approach to the job is "the art of community" by Jono Bacon. He is or was the admin for Ubuntu forums, among other open source pursuits and projects he's been known for.

I take what comes my way at this point. I always get something be it video, an install, a welding job from time to time. I mainly take care of my 4yo son until I can get him in school full time

I cant send him to day care and he will not sit through the entire day at pre-k. I am also a full time back to schooler because there is not need not to do it. In two years I hope to have at least one masters and be part way through with the other two. What I have done is really irrelavent.

For the first five years I've been with my current company I configured a COTS product that handled our EDMS. I extended it by using their API(s), writing in VBScript. For the last two years I've been going to more .Net and have been branching out a little across the company. A few years ago I had the opportunity to be part of a team that wrote to the largest non-military RFP at that time in the US (it was the bid for California Medicaid around 2008ish). I worked on that project for about 9 months.
