Recovering files using Vantec adapter

Hey guys, I have a question and I was hoping any of you might be able to help.

I'm helping one of my friends recover their files from their laptop because their laptop broke. I bought the Vantech SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 adapter and it works successfully.

Although, the hard drive appears under "My Computer", I cannot access my friends files. When I try to access through "Local disk -> Users -> "her name", I get an error saying "You currently don't have permission to access this folder"

Is there anyway to bypass this error?
