Rig in my sig is starting to drop PCIE slots so a new build is in order. I am a light gamer and either of these two cards fit the budget. I have not really been paying attention to things since I built the rig in my sig. I am looking to get better gaming performance so I can play some newer games while I am building the new rig.
Here are the specific cards I am looking at.

I am not sure if either card has any great performance advantages over the other. Any input is welcome.

The two cards really trade blows back and forth depending on the game/resolution being used. I don't think you can really go wrong one way or the other, I would just go by if you have a preference to either ATI or nVidia, if you want to use 3 monitors w/o using two cards ATI would be the way to go as eyefinity allows it.

I have no real preference for either ATI or nVdia. I have been researching all afternoon and came to the same conclusion about performance. I guess it will boil down to price when I hit the buy button. Thanks for the advice!

I use both nvidia and ati, what you might want to consider is a gtx 560 448 core, it basically is as fast as the cards mentioned and less expensive than the gtx 570.

For the price though and the cooler I would not consider any other card but that sapphire 6970, that thing looks awesome.

+1 on the 6970. I have 2 in crossfireX, and what I love about it is the temps. Idle is 36 C, BF3 gaming is 47 C max! I have the Sapphire 6970s. Also, Eyefinity is what I plan to do next year when I have extra money and the grahics colors are just beautiful. The dual bios is awesome and if you srew up on the bios on profile 2, switch it to profile 1 and you will have access to default bios and recover!

I would not get the XFX 6950 830 Mhz 1 GB. The temps are aweful. While gaming BF3, temps reached 73C max! I have 2 HD 6970s in crossfireX and the max temp reached 47 C.
