It sounds like what you are describing is what happens when an invalid/self-signed SSL certificate is being used on a site and IE is working as designed here. Are you given the option to continue to the site?

It went away.I thought that the problem was because I imported old favorites that I had stored back into IE8, but this is new connection so that must have been the problem.

Thank You

Welcome to the forums, I would suggest reading the following thread:

While putting an opinion is good and helps contribute to the forums, you should really post content with it. We also don't know about the context of the issue. This could be on a website that doesn't work with another browser or they want to use IE.

Thanks thideras. I personally run Firefox or some variant of it (Iceweasel) most of the time. I even run Chrome frequently at work because it is just quick to load and light on resources. I also use IE every single day as well, often not exactly by choice. Some people must use IE for applications which were designed to be run in IE and nothing else (e.g. - corporate environments). There are a number of applications that I use at work where I could use Firefox/Chrome but the level of inconvenience to have to use FF or Chrome with those applications is just too great for me to justify switching. When it comes to software, I always say 'use the best tool for the job' and sometimes IE is the best tool for certain apps.
