Software suggestions

I'm looking for a free drawing/sketching program (non-pirated please/thank you) any suggestions, doesn't have to be to fancy, but better than pain would be nice. I already have a photo editor (photo scape) but I would like something that's a bit better for making original stuff. also I'm not uber artistic, so no need to go crazy with features.

Would InkScape work? It is free, but I've never used it.

When you say school, are you in college?

Autodesk has a really sweet student program. You can get any of their stuff with a student license.
