Please recommend a utility to read SMART information for a laptop running Windows 7. I can find a crapload of them using Google but I suspect that crapload of them probably include a load of crap.

I'm looking for something to read the SMART information on demand. I don't really want something that's going to run in the background and use cycles and RAM to watch the drive. Nor am I looking for tool bars, download enhancers, key loggers etc. I'm used to 'sudo apt-get install' for installing new S/W and frankly some of the download pages I see for Windows S/W scare me.

thanks,
hank

How about HD Tune? v2.55 is the free version...
HD Tune reports that the drive supports SMART diagnostics but I cannot see any place where it actually reports the SMART parameters. Did I overlook something?

thanks,
hank

Edit: For example, here is what I get from smartmontools on Linux:
Code:
hbarta@cypress:~$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda
smartctl 5.40 2010-07-12 r3124 [x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu] (local build)

I use Hard Disk Sentinal on all my machines, it even works with most RAID cards. Great for my fileserver :)
Thanks for the tip, jmdixon85, but Hard Disk Sentinel looks like it installs a monitoring process which is one of the things I did not want. Also their description was a bit vague about whether it reports full SMART attributes and I could find no screen shots.

HDTune gave me enough info to ID the drive (A Seagate ST9500325AS) so I installed SeaTools. That listed some SMART attributes but not the full set. For example, reallocated sector count was left out. That's something I want to see.

I continued searching and ran across Passsmark DiskCheckup.
http://www.passmark.com/products/diskcheckup.htm. It seems to do what I want without any drama and without installing any background processes. For example here is what it reports for the drive in the new laptop:
Code:
