generally speaking they have both a software center in the menu as well as you can use aptitude

Code:
aptitude search opera
sudo apt-get install <whatever the result of aptitude search was>

That isn't how you use linux, its how you use windows - you don't usually download apps from sites and just install them on Linux.

The best part of Linux is that it has a package manager. The package manager includes virtually all linux apps - it will download and install them for you. It is rare to need to manually download an app... If you do manually download an app for linux, you typically need to extract it from the archive, then compile it from source code. That is unnecessary though.

If you go through the menu, open software center, then search for opera - mint will download and install opera for you from there.

You can use the terminal with the aptitude commands, but you don't have to.

Can you explain differently? I don't understand what you are saying very well.

I'd search for schreiersims, or filter by educational programs to browse to that. You should see the program you want listed, then you can select to install. It will tell you when the installation is complete.

I see. That looks like you did a search for realplayer, and that is a list of applications that might match what you are looking for.

But why are you using the terminal instead of the software manager?

You can access the graphical software manager from the menu, and it should be easier for you to understand what you are doing. You can figure out the terminal and installing apps that way some other time, if you need to.

If you really prefer to use the terminal however, you could try the following to search and be sure you use the right program name:

Code:
aptitude search schreiersims
Then if that search lists the name of the program you are looking for, you can then do the following to install

Code:
sudo apt-get install gap-matrix-schreiersims

tried to install ATI 12.3 driver and recieved this error
Install instructions
To install the AMD Catalyst proprietary driver using the Automatic option, follow these
steps:

Launch the Terminal Application/Window and navigate to the AMD Catalyst
proprietary driver download.
Enter the command sh ./ati-driver-installer-x86.x86_64.run to launch the AMD
Catalyst proprietary driver installer

HTML Code:
sh ./ati-driver-installer-x86.x86_64.run
sh: Can't open ./ati-driver-installer-x86.x86_64.run

Or am I supposed to use the terminal to find the file I already downloaded ?

From the terminal window, you need to be in the folder that holds that file. If you did an "ls" from the terminal window, you should see that file.

try ./ati-driver-installer-x86.x86_64.run

by itself

or sh ati-driver-installer-x86.x86_64.run

don't use sh and ./ at the same time

./ launches a program or script that is already executable (green color) in terminal

edit: also make sure you are in the right folder

cd Downloads

./ati-driver-blahblah

yea ls means list

and there is no lower-case "downloads" folder

You have to type exactly what you see in that list

Downloads, with a capital D

cd Downloads

./ati(then press tab) (then press enter)

If you want a windows to linux type definition, it tells the file to become an .exe. so do chmod +x ati-driver-installer-x86.x86_64.run then perform ./ati-driver-installer-x86.x86_64.run and see if it gives you a different result.

chmod is CHange MODe and the +x means add an execute permission to the file in question. And if you want to take it away it would be -x.
