CPU for gaming.. SB or wait for IB?

Is it worth for me to wait for IB? I am ready to order a CPU/Mobo today if there are no significant gains with IB. I have a feeling IB will OC much better than SB? What do you guys think?

My main use is gaming so I have a feeling it won't make much of a difference?

A 2500k will be plenty for any of today's games. The way I understand it is that, past a point, the CPU only provides minor performance boosts. My friend runs Skyrim at 50 FPS (minimum) on Ultra settings with a plain 560 and a 2500k.

Can't go wrong with the 2500K. Runs cool and OCs very high with little effort.
A story came out on IB last week that is scaring me a bit:
http://news.techeye.net/chips/intels...e-specs-leaked

They claimed the CPU reached a temp. of 100C under load, but I'm pretty sure it's that HWmonitor is not reading correctly.
There are rumors going around that Intel has issues with the 22nm 3D transistors. I am sure Intel will reduce leakage and increase yields as this process matures.

Time will tell. There is some time left, so if your in a rush to build, you can pick up a 2500K and upgrade to IB at minimal cost upon release.

might as well wait.
go z77 board in the plans and either go used SB. or wait 4-5 months for used SB or IB prices to settle.

z77 is supposed to work with either chip.

If it's to overhaul your main rig then I would say wait. If you were talking about moving from the Core 2 Duo/Quad era then I would say go for it but i7 860 to a 2500K would be losing 4 hyper-threading cores (not a big deal for gaming as far as I can tell) for not much gain in speed. Not enough to make it worth the hassle considering how close IB is.

Wait, ivy bridge is just around the corner and prices will drop on 2500k.

It wont make much of a difference in gaming. A couple FPS at normal resolutions. Maybe check out the IB rumor thread that was started a while ago as it has some leaked benchmarks.

What is your i7 860 running at? If you are around 4GHZ, switching to an i5 2500k is going to make 0 difference in actual gameplay (of course with an overclock on the 2500k, benchmarks will be higher)

So, i would also recommend waiting.

It does increase performance a bit.......it just depends on the title and settings. His i7 860 is a bit faster than the 965EE they have listed.

from what i have seen, in cpu intensive tasks, the 3770k IB was 10-15% faster than a 2600k, but i believe the 3770k is also 100mhz faster. Realistically, i think clock per clock you are looking at 5-7% in cpu intensive tasks and probably negligible performance increase in gaming. However, considering you have waiting this long already, might as well wait the extra month.

EDIT: i am also getting a new rig in the near future and for me its between ivy bridge 3770k or sandy bridge ep e5 2620 (need some more digging around).

I don't think anyone knows enough about IB to tell you either way. At best we can only speculate, similar to the speculations and anticipation before BD was launch. Yes you would expect IB to be an improvement but by how much and at what price?

You've got a pretty decent rig right now. I'd OC the heck out of it if you haven't already done so. I'd also upgrade the GPU first before upgrading the entire system.

Again, reviews are out (see Anandtech).

Are you referring to reviews of the 680 or IB? Maybe it's just me but I don't see any "reviews" of IB anywhere. Tons of speculation but no reviews. Which makes sense as IB is not yet release.

I mean both (but this is IB thread).

Tweaktown - http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/46...70k/index.html
Anand - http://www.anandtech.com/show/5626/i...-core-i7-3770k

They are PREviews, but quite comprehensive.

As always, use your own judgement/wallet. But once IB is on the streets Intel intends for it to replace a lot of CPUs over time. It could mean some pretty good deals as the older inventory is purged. And from what I'm reading, unless you need native support for PCIe 3.0 you can upgrade to 2600-2700 without looking at some serious power gimme's.
