3930K Temp Cooling

Hello,

I am building a new system that will feature the 3930K as I will be CADing as well as a little gaming. If you don't know, this CPU does not come with a stock cooling option as it is aimed at the enthusiast user. I will eventually implement a water-cooling system, but I would rather get the PC up and running now (no OC'ing) while I wait for the WC system to design itself. What do y'all recommend? H70? 620? I don't want to spend too much for something that is temporary.

most will recommend a good air cooler over any of those systems.

I would just go air until you are ready for a full loop.

If you're not going to OC, buy something cheap. A $30 CM 212 would work fine... even if you wanted to overclock. No need to buy a premade "water" cooler.

From experience I would stay away from premade water kits. Just run a cheap air cooler and take the time to design a good custom loop.

Thanks for the tips and quick replies. I will take your advice and go with a cheap air cooler. Air cooling didn't even cross my mind since I've been focusing on WC'ing ( idiot!)

edit: does the CM 212 fit 2011 socket?

The Evo version of the 212 will fit.
This one

Yep, I can confirm that it comes with the proper mounting hardware to mount up on LGA2011. And it's a more efficient cooler than the 212+ too and only around $5 more. Unless someone is severely strapped for cash and can't afford the extra $5, I would recommend the 212 EVO over the 212+ every time. You can even do some mild (4 GHz) overclocking with the EVO.

also, if you spend a few more $$ on a air based cooler, you can get some really nice air coolers that will outperform something like a h60/70/80 etc. I would also suggest a good TIM, I think after all my looking about I'm partial too PK-1 from ProlimaTech

You can always spend a few extra $$ and get something better lol. I have some old AS5, but I would like to get a new TIM. PK-1 does seem pretty good according to SkinneeLabs here and I've been wanting to try Indigo Xtreme, but I'll make that decision later.

hahahhahaha, smart a$$; lol. just pointing out that some air coolers out perform crappy premade water systems. I beleive AS5 has a shelf life, and cure time; just get some new PK1, it was $2 for a gram the last time i bough it. 1 gram should be good for 2-3 mounts i think. problem with indigo is proper setup and "burn in" or whatever they call it, and that if you are going to take this apart at anytime soon or in the future I'd think the indigo would b a nightmare.

Yeah, my initial thought was to get some PK-1 for the temporary air cooler and maybe re-seat my GPU with it. Then use the Indigo Xtreme for the water block.

Somebody mentioned this in another thread (may have been Conumdrum, not too sure), but something to keep in mind with the Indigo Xtreme as the TIM, water cooling experts here recommend routine maintenance of flushing every 6 months and teardown every 12. If you're okay with purchasing it every 6 months then it's probably the best solution (at least it was the best performing TIM when I was doing research a while back), but it can get expensive.

Sorry Mort, I knew it was a guru here but my mind ain't as sharp as it once was Your words struck home for me though since that is what I'm using for TIM and didn't take maintenance into consideration. I guess I'll have to go a different route when I flush...

The only way to get close to the same performance from a TIM like Indigo with a compound is to lap the CPU/heatsink, correct? I've never tried it but it sounds intriguing.

Lapping is less useful these days due to improvements in the bow of waterblocks.

I am doing something similar (not to thread jack, but it is very similar and could help OP out too) but does the H60 work on the 2011 sockets. I know i can research it but i was just curious because I have one laying around. I will be running the exact same processor

I went to the Corsair website for you, it appears so.

Yes i was on there and what made me question myself was this statement

"Whether you’ve got Socket LGA775, LGA1155, LGA1156, or LGA1366, we’ve got compatibility inside the box. That’s right, even the brand new Core i5 and Core i7 2x00 series processors are supported, right out of the box."

i didnt see the 2011 on there. Thank you very much
