nightmare uninstalling ati drivers

so today i helped a friend upgrade his gateway dx series desktop from a radeon 4xxx series to a nvidia gtx550ti, his factory psu is a 300watt so we got him a 650w psu with the new graphic card. i installed everything, went on and tried to uninstall ati drivers, the uninstall program stopped at the point where after i chose express uninstall, and its populating a list of things to uninstall and doesnt go anywhere beyond that point. so i did it over n over and it just freezes there. so i went on and delete all the folders with ati or amd one by one, installed nvidia drivers and everything seemed to work fine. but i could still see ati cataclyst control in the control panel programs. so he went home and told me the screen is turning blue on him little by little and that the audio didnt work for his speakers. but the headphone jack works, songs are playing by the melody only and no one singing... this is getting weird, hope someone have had experience on this. we tried aftermarket hard uninstall softwares but still didnt work.

I've had similar issues with both ATI and nVidia. elari20 is right, Driver Sweeper gets rid of all trace of the drivers, then you can proceed with a clean install.

I seriously doubt either of these issues are related to the AMD drivers in any way.

His screen turning blue little by little? I've never heard of drivers causing anything like this, but interesting that you would blame the deleted drivers for a card that isn't installed anymore before you would blame the new card that is actually installed now.

"headphone jack works, songs are playing by the melody only and no one singing". I don't see how this could be related to the AMD drivers either. Maybe if he was using HDMI before, changing drivers might have caused the default audio device to get set to something else. If he can hear out of the "headphone jack" (which one?) but isn't getting the complete song then it's probably a 5.1 or 7.1 soundcard trying to distribute the music among all of the channels and he's just plugged into the fronts or maybe even the rear jack.

AMD drivers = #1 Scapegoat for user error.

Driver Sweaper is a very recommendation. I've had past issues with nVidia drivers and this is the only way to clear it out and fix it.

As for the other issues... video glitches like that i'd say is more dealing with your new card/drivers. Audio can be a combination of things, including the graphic card drivers for either card (both have the option to play audio via HDMI).

Can't remember if it was Vista or Win7, you can have both AMD and nVidia drivers installed on the system together easily without any issues. Just depends on the card your using to use the proper drivers.

Just deleting folders still leaves a lot behind. Deleting folders and uninstalling are not the same thing.

You should have tried uninstalling the software before swapping out the hardware.

1) uninstall existing drivers
2) run driver sweeper in safe mode
3) change out hardware
4) install new drivers

I would have at least tried to go into the Windows uninstall utility if the AMD one failed to work.

At this point it may be best to just re-install Windows and call it a day.

Those are odd issues. Kind of sounds like the new card might be faulty.
