Good day fellas,

I'm new in this community and was here hoping to find some best opinions from the experts. I am from Australia and is planning to buy a new laptop. I was hoping to find a laptop that I can use for my daily tasks, gaming, as well as for my work as a web developer, also I am running a vmware. Right now I do have 2 choices to buy an alienware M14x or toshiba satellite P870/027. My budget is around $1500-1800. Any advice would greatly much be appreciated. Link is below for my choices..

Hi there, welcome to the forum! :)

I'm certainly no expert, but I'd go with the Toshiba Satellite hands down.
More RAM, larger screen, better GPU, larger HD, better resolution, newer/faster CPU.

It's amazing what kind of laptop you can get "now a days". Maybe I'm getting old...

Thank you for your response Jmtyra, was planning to buy toshiba too, just in case someone would suggest a more better laptop with a cheaper price.. :)

I'd take an Asus or MSI equivalent - save a few dollars any day over a Toshiba...their warranty is horrid for when it fries/dies.

Lenovo Ideapad Y580

third generation core i7 CPU
8gigs RAM
big HDD
15.6"
nVidia 660m 2gig discrete GPU

Can be had for well less than $1500 USD

Of course, I'm not sure if they ship international, but I'm sure they do if you buy direct from them.

You also get 10% off if you're a first time customer.

Thank you for your advice, yes i found the model on lenovo site itself, good prices, I think I am going to consider it. Thanks again man. :)

Yes asus and MSI had a very good specs, but I'm afraid on going with their products, cause I found ton's of negative reviews of asus and MSI.

You'll find tons of negative reviews about any brand of laptop, if you look for them. The industry as a whole has a certain failure rate, it's not just certain laptops. Sometimes, chipset manufacturers get it wrong. (e.g. Nvidia chipsets come to mind)

Asus and Acer make good gaming laptops. If you can hold out for about 3 months, the Ivy Bridge laptops will be rolling out by then.
But alienware are over priced Dell XPS systems.

Actually, I found a very good asus laptop, G74 series for $1495 that's 25% off in **** smith, better GPU than toshiba one I posted above, And I am now totally confused, if I buy it or not.. Below is the link.

If you can wait a few more weeks to a couple of months... I would wait as by that time, Kepler nVidia GPUs will be more widespread in gaming laptops than they are now.

From the reviews I've read and videos I've seen, they are much better than the Fermi GPUs (5xxm series) as they run cooler and perform better.

That's always the tough part with buying hardware, there is always something newer/better coming up. It simply depends on your time frame requirements. Madhatter has an excellent point, but keep in mind that whatever you buy (and whenever you buy it) will become outdated fairly quickly.
