Is there any way to stop Chrome going to the new tab automatically every time I open a link in a new tab on a different website?

Yes. Click on the 'wrench' in the top left corner. Choose settings. Right below the sign-in part are the settings that you want to change. Choose the last option and specify a 'home' page and you're all set.
