Can we split x16 (physical) to x8 and x8?

Just a random thing that popped out of my mind.

Can we split a x16 slot to two x8 without using any "hard" stuff? I'm open to using commercial stuff. It's just a random thing that popped out of my head.

No short answer.

Yes if you have something to power the extra slot the lanes can be split.

I could power the extra slot, as long as it does not require any special ICs.

What I want to know is if you need an IC or something to make that work.

You need a switch to split the x-16, yes.
