fair enough, it is a fairly old technology that is somewhat unknown today.

IRC = Internet Relay Chat (old time chat room)
Software to access: mIRC or web based: Go to http://synirc.net , webchat, pick a name, change channel to #Hawken

The tool there harvests publicly posted beta keys which you then put on your PlayHawken account.
 
I was in the Alpha, and let me tell you, it's a pretty sweet game. They've got some playbalancing issues, and I'm not a huge fan of the limited customization options (compared to a MechWarrior game), but it's still fun as hell. It's far more of a twitch FPS than a true Mech game.

1-Sign in to your account on PlayHawken.com.
2-Click on the Redeem Code link.
3-Enter the following code: NYCCPILOT
4-Your account has now been added to Closed Beta!

PLEASE NOTE: ​This code has a limited duration and number of uses. It will expire after Sunday, October 21. This code will grant access to all Closed Beta events.

Accounts that redeemed an Alpha 2 code will be automatically invited to Closed Beta, meaning these players should NOT redeem this code.
